Through carbon trading, both achieve sustainability targets—the tech firm gains profit, the manufacturer offsets emissions. It's a win-win. Why is this largely overlooked? Maybe due to its complexity or novelty. Digitalization is needed. ‘’….resources are finite and therefore they should be utilized in a wise and conservative manner…’’ This is the basis, in my view, of setting up sustainability policies. At organization level, facilities management then plays a pivotal role in understanding and fostering sustainability goals. Sustainability is in itself multifaceted in that it encompasses several aspects within the tentacles of an organization. i.e energy efficiency, water and waste management, green building practices, sustainable procurement, employee engagement, regulatory compliance, data-driven decision-making, and the integration of renewable energy sources.  In all these areas, sustainability efforts not only reduce an organization's environmental impact but also lead to cost savings, all these while aligning the organization with societal expectations for responsible and sustainable business practices. FM professionals for instance ensure reduced environmental impact of an organization by adopting energy-efficient technologies, managing water resources effectively, and implementing waste reduction and recycling programs to minimize waste sent to landfills. Further still, FM contributes to sustainability by adopting green building practices, ensuring buildings are designed and maintained according to eco-friendly standards. Sustainable procurement practices can also be integrated, sourcing environmentally responsible products and materials. By engaging employees in sustainability initiatives and complying with relevant regulations, FM can foster a culture of sustainability within the organization.  All these efforts can be tracked and measured. Data collection and reporting therefore becomes imperative for setting and tracking sustainability goals. A push toward more sustainable technology. 🍏 To maintain the ecological balance tech companies started to use sustainable materials to reduce the environmental impact of their products. Energy-efficient designs ⏭ To address the significant challenge of energy consumption, technology companies can incorporate energy-efficient designs into their products. This includes optimizing hardware components and implementing power-saving features that reduce energy usage during idle or low-demand periods. Renewable energy sources 🤖 Embracing renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, allows technology companies to power their operations and manufacturing processes in a sustainable manner. This shift reduces reliance on fossil fuels and mitigates the associated environmental consequences. Power management features 👨💻 Implementing intelligent power management features within devices enables efficient energy utilization. These features automatically adjust power consumption based on usage patterns, ensuring minimal energy waste during idle or standby modes. Implement circular economy models 🎍 companies can implement circular economy models that prioritize product reuse, repair, and recycling. This can be achieved by designing products with circularity in mind, using closed-loop supply chains that minimize waste, and implementing product-as-a-service models that encourage long-term use and reuse. Educate consumers 📚 Technology companies can educate consumers about the importance of sustainable technology and the actions they can take to reduce their impact on the environment.  Reduce Packaging Waste 💱 Technology companies can reduce packaging waste by using minimal packaging, using biodegradable or recyclable materials.    Minimize Water Usage Reduce E-Waste making technology  more sustainable is not easy but it's possible and necessary requires a holistic approach that prioritizes energy efficiency, sustainable materials, repair and recycling, circular economy models, and consumer education. By adopting these strategies, technology companies can reduce their environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future. Is your job circular? You may have noticed that I’m now recruiting for 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀. But do you know what does that mean? 🤔 Circular jobs are occupations that directly involve or indirectly support strategies of the circular economy. They form the supporting shell of the circular economy. A few examples are: 💡 Circular equipment engineers/designers 📊 Data analyst for circular economy 👩🏫 Teachers/professors on circular economy • 🔗 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀: these jobs occur in other sectors that do not directly affect the transition to the circular economy but can still adopt circular strategies. They include jobs that provide services to core circular strategies, including jobs in information services, logistics, and the public sector.
