In January 2023, nearly 40 organisations signed the Global Health Equity Network Zero Health Gaps Pledge at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos. Clearly the drive for #healthequity is an urgent priority for the global healthcare community. The thematic session 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆, moderated by Antonio Estrella, will answer the following questions: - How do we define Health Equity? - What activities have taken place this year to advance the Pledge? - What more can we collectively do in the private sector to support WEF and Health Systems to achieve this goal? Thrilled to have attended the "Optimizing Digital Health Transformation" event by Transform Health here in NY on a rainy morning. It's been an insightful session, discussing key barriers, enablers and goals in today's #digitalhealth ecosystem. Some take away messages from the session: Key Barriers: some crucial challenges were highlighted; from the absence of costed strategies to the lack of interoperability architecture and shared services. These hurdles underscore the urgent need for transformation. Goals: shared objectives include reducing entropy, aligning resources, and accelerating measurable progress in digital health ecosystems. Equitable, accountable transformation is the way forward. Ask to All Stakeholders: Encouraging Member States, Development Partners, and all Digital Health stakeholders to join forces in co-creating and supporting this transformation. As one of the panelists reminded us: let’s make it country-led, not donor-led! Transformative Investments: It's not just about boosting digital health; it's about building the necessary infrastructure for a robust foundation. A substantial estimated investment of US$12.5 billion over 5 years is required to support priority areas. Recommendations: there’re clear recommendations for governments, donors, and the private sector to ensure coordinated and aligned investments for the digital transformation of health. Now it’s time to act! Priorities for the Way Forward: Multi-stakeholder engagement, sustainable reporting, better coordination, and prioritized, equitable investment are our priorities for the future. Health is a social good in which all countries can invest and from which we can benefit globally. Last week we were at the Ministerial conference of People-Centered Health Innovation at the OECD - OCDE in Paris. My colleague Nick Beijer with a back ground in #MedTech and I as an #Environmental Scientist team up to collaborate for sustainable innovations in health care Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu. We see that we can decide now how to make best use of innovations in #artificialintelligence and #genomics for health care, for better health and climate neutral health care. Discussions at OECD were on what are the global goals we want to achieve and how can digitalization support this best? Developments in technology can not be the driver by it self. Today, we reflect on the #social, #economic, and #environmental "drivers of health" that shape our world, in light of the insights from the Deloitte Health Equity report. This research highlights that these drivers account for about 80% of health outcomes, a staggering figure that challenges the industry’s conventional focus on clinical care. The report uncovers deep-rooted and long-standing #healthequity disparities. Worryingly, these disparities have only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and looming climate change threats. Such findings should compel us, as a global community, to shift the way we approach healthcare towards a more holistic view of its determinants.
