Over the weekend I celebrated my 10 year workiversary at Cardinal Health. I’ve been so fortunate to land in and continue to be a part of a company and more specifically, an accounting team with a culture that’s second to none.
Thanks to all my colleagues, current and former for making these first 10 years so memorable. Special shout out to that first interview panel in October 2013, Trish English, Brian Timple, and Courtney Mitros for giving me the nod 🙂.
I’m not much of a poster on LinkedIn but I’ll give it a shot to share a couple guiding principles that I’ve used throughout my personal career.
1. Be present - Utilize every opportunity you can to be around your peers, manager, and leadership. Use those opportunities to build trust with colleagues, learn via “osmosis” from leadership, and when you can, ask questions. In the office, team events, or virtual settings, find creative ways to interact.
2. Make your manager’s job easier - Focus on being great in your current role. Once you have a good grasp, proactively do your manager’s role. Learn and observe the skills you need to get to the next level and demonstrate them before being asked to. Even if it’s not the right answer, attempting to provide a solution means something and is way better than waiting for feedback (that may never come).
3. Be honest - Honest with yourself and your manager about what’s next. Are you fighting an internal clock? Why? What’s most important to you in your next role? Why? Have open conversations and digest their feedback. The best thing you can do is be aligned with your manager on your interests, career goals, and timing.
4. Say yes (kind of) - Guess what? If you do the above opportunities will find you. When they do, say yes. First, say yes in your own head. Don’t shut down the conversation immediately. If leadership brought this to you it was for a reason. Listen. Then consider your true interest and goals. Ask clarifying questions like, why do you think I’d be good in this role, how will this role help my career, what skills can I develop in this role, etc.
