New The Breakthrough Institute report launched today from me & Alex Smith. Check it out for a deep dive on: ① Why agrifood tech has received disproportionately little global climate finance to date ② The common technological and financial barriers faced by emerging ag and food industries (from alternative proteins to indoor farming) ③ Policy opportunities for the US government to better ensure needed decarbonization ag technologies can scale from the lab bench to commercial deployment As volatility continues to plague the private-sector finance landscape, the report makes the case for a far more interventionist approach by USDA with programs aimed at research, commercial demonstration, and deployment.

If you are trying to understand climate and investment in agriculture, I recommend you read Emily Bass and Alex Smith's recent report on GHG, Agriculture, and R&D investment. When you add the health benefits of food, climate and health, and the GDP impact of US technology exports, it is worth thinking about how an order of magnitude increase of public and private investment may improve climate, health, and GDP. And may serve as a hedge in global stability.

Climate Smart Agriculture, like most innovative ideas, seeks to combine the best of two worlds - reducing emissions from farms while sustaining, if not increasing crop yields. Well if its that good, why is it hard to scale? Here is University of Michigan study, explaining the problem. In my view, too much focus on the technology itself with little emphasis on the real-world factors that make or break it- the extension service, cultural nuances and incentives for small farmers is a recipe for disaster, pushing people to write off the technology as a "fad". Investing in "intangibles" such as institutions and people is as critical as the "tangible" outputs that programs often get fixated on. #climatechange #SDGs2030 #Agriculture https://lnkd.in/gkyf3m_2

Aligning profit-seeking endeavours with a more holistic vision of the impact of our activities on ecosystems is crucial and all the more obvious in a sector like agriculture where economic performance is directly linked to environmental conditions. As the agricultural sector increasingly relies on data analysis and technological tools, Sébastien Boyer, founder of FarmWise, advocates for an agriculture where these technological developments serve the sector's environmental and social transitions. How do we support a sector through these transitions? How can we take advantage of structural and structuring changes? How can we have a substantial impact on our entire ecosystem? These are some of the issues discussed with Sébastien Boyer in an interview for #BOTH, the newsletter about impact and growth by Ring Capital. → https://lnkd.in/ezYy9kHt 💌 Subscribe to our newsletter directly in the article #ImpactInvesting #impact #agriculture

Two decades ago the Netherlands made a pledge to grow two times as much food with half the resources. They've far exceeded that goal. Climate change and food insecurity are global challenges that have complex roots in inequality. As climate change and population growth put pressure on our food systems, the Netherlands is showing us ways forward with hyper-efficient agricultural innovations. Four takeaways from their innovations that are helping drive sustainability: 👉 circular agriculture 👉 shortening the time it takes to develop new seed varieties 👉 incentivizing innovation 👉 protecting vital genetic resources to combat global hunger Seed Valley, a cluster of world-leading companies in plant breeding, seed cultivation, and processing, has been able to produce more crop yield through access to high-quality seeds and innovations in seed and farming technologies, including genetically engineered seeds and precision farming systems. These technologies have allowed for growth, higher yields, and expansion into new areas, including increasing corn production through denser and earlier planting. Harnessing the forces of Creative Destruction
1moGreat work Emily Bass and Alex Smith. Building on your 10% of US GHG comment I would add $1.9T of the healthcare cost of poor nutrition. A focus on nutrient density improves health and yields a positive externality on climate. #foodishealth
