Survey Reveals Missing or Erroneous Credits in 31% of Streaming Tracks - “The objective of the analysis was to understand the extent of the gap left by incomplete, incorrect, or non-existent metadata—as well as to decipher the inherent difficulties each platform faces when identifying tracks. What may seem like mere bureaucracy to the untrained eye becomes a drain where the money of rights holders flows. After all, any errors in metadata registration by labels and distributors, which are the sources used by DSPs (or platforms), can lead to errors in revenue distribution. Not to mention the invisibility of those who create the essential raw material of the music industry, a problem of moral rights.” #Spotify #UBC #Metadata #Streaming #Legal #StreamingRoyalties #Royalties #RecordedMusic #StreamingServices #StreamingMedia #ISRC #MusicTracks #MusicStreams #MusicRoyalties #Songs #Recordings #US #Music #MusicBusiness #Musica #MusicIndustry #Musique #Musik #MusicBiz #DSPs #Songwriters #Artists #Creators #MusicPublishing #RecordLabels #Musicians #Composers #Digital #GESAC #AppleMusic #Apple #Amazon #AmazonMusic #Deezer #YouTube #Brazil #Brasil #MoralRights #IP #IntellectualProperty #CopyrightLaw #Copyright #DerechoDeAutor #DroitdAuteur

A survey conducted by UBC - União Brasileira de Compositores and published on the website, 04/25/2024, quantifies the persistent problem of identifying the rights holders of songs on major streaming platforms. From a sample of 100 songs by 100 artists spanning various genres, an average of 31% either lacked credits or contained various errors, across the five platforms analyzed (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, and YouTube Music, the largest in the national market). The identification problem is not consistent across all platforms, with some—Amazon and YouTube—in a worse situation than others.

Thankfully, CMOs nearly always have composer credits so we’re not dependent on the services to provide them in order to make payment. Things fall apart when ISRCs are erroneous or missing.
