The 7th Liechtenstein Workshop on Sustainable Finance took place on 21 September 2023. Leading experts from around the world discussed the latest developments and research in the field of sustainable finance. The highlight of the event was the Award Ceremony, where the most outstanding papers were honoured. The Impact Award of the LIFE Climate Foundation went to the team of Tobias Bauckloh (WiSo Faculty, Universität zu Köln), Juris Dobrick and André Höck (both University of Kassel), Sebastian Utz (University of Augsburg and University of St. Gallen) and Marcus Wagner (University of Augsburg and Bureau d'Economie Théorique et Appliquée, Strasbourg). Prof. Bauckloh and his co-authors examined the extent to which the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) ratings of different rating providers match. Prof. Bauckloh emphasises: "This is relevant because there is a financing gap for achieving the SDGs, and investors could use SDG ratings to redirect financial resources to companies that make an important contribution to achieving the SDGs. For this to happen, however, it is necessary that SDG ratings from different providers make a consistent statement about a company's SDG contribution." However, the results of the study clearly show that SDG ratings from different providers are not consistent. The rationale for the award also emphasises the important role of consistent SDG ratings. With regard to sustainable investments, these form an important basis for the efficient and sensible use of funds, particularly in the context of sustainable finance. "Financial Market Response to Climate Litigation Against Corporations" by Misato Sato, Glen Gostlow, Joana Setzer, Catherine Higham, and Frank Venmans (London School of Economics), analyzing the financial market response to climate litigation and building a global database of climate change-related lawsuits against corporations. These outstanding works reflect the progress in sustainable finance and #investments, highlighting the growing interest in the field among scholars and the increasing importance of #sustainability. Influential voices from the worlds of finance, sustainability and academia, including IMD’s Vanina Farber, elea Professor of Social Innovation and Dean of the EMBA program, gathered at the Building Bridges Summit in Geneva today. Universities have a key role to play, said Professor Farber, in convening diverse stakeholders in a safe space where ideas can be freely exchanged and transformed into scalable solutions. The Summit’s agenda was simple, and urgent: to figure out how to mobilize capital at speed to address the climate and nature crises, as well as the social dimension. Patrick Odier, President of Swiss Sustainable Finance and Chair, Building Bridges, urged those gathered to act immediately. “We know the facts, we have the technologies, the means and the resources to act. We have to be bold and brave. Business as usual does not suffice to reach our goals. We have to move from the what to the how, from the when to the now.” Nailing down exactly how the goals can be achieved is the hard part, and delegates will be attempting to thrash out some of the practicalities over the next three days. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, insisted that trade could be part of the solution, and encouraged the finance community to reassess risks when looking at investing in developing countries. Alain Berset, President of the Swiss Confederation, said “It’s a question of political will. We need to mobilize our intellectual, human and financial resources and to form courageous alliances.” The Swiss government passed a law in June formalizing its goal to become climate neutral by 2050. The bill includes measures to reduce energy consumption, with financial assistance for those who replace their fossil-fuel heating, and support for companies that invest in climate-friendly technologies. #IMDImpact #BuildingBridges23

Never twice without a third, right?   Picture this: ·     A group of passionate academics, hungry for debates and knowledge sharing. ·     A collective of sustainable finance experts with undeniable expertise. ·     Motivated participants, each with diverse backgrounds and a strong commitment. ·    A gorgeous learning venue nestled in the heart of Brussels. ·     A dedicated coordination team, asking a thousand and one questions to enhance content and formulas.   Mix it all together, sometimes in small groups, sometimes all together.  And there you have it, the explosive blend of the second edition of the Sustainable Finance Masterclass, organized by Ichec Brussels Management School, Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management, and UNAMUR!   The curtain falls on this second edition, which has seen its content undergo a transformation. We kept the best of the first year (including the great session on ESG!), no worry! Some of the memorable moments I will keep in mind will be the opening debate between Etienne de Callataÿ de Calatay and Luc van Liedekere, the very honest discussion with Piet Colruyt about impact investing and sustainable finance.. and all the new EU content (e.g. taxonomies) brough by Vincent Vandeloise, Aleksandra Palinska and Julia Symon! The new section on systemic thinking in finance with Philippe Drouillon was also very succesful! What a great year!   Two major sources of satisfaction: ✨ outstanding educational evaluations from our participants and the warm, ✨ constructive atmosphere within the group!   And now? We're taking a short hibernation before gearing up for the next academic year.   We're convinced that our mission to educate today's decision-makers about sustainable finance is more relevant than ever. We're also convinced that channeling our energy toward truly transformative finance, aligned with societal challenges, is essential. This type of finance is within our reach, and the challenges of our time compel us to make it a reality!   A huge thank you to everyone who was enthusiastic from day one, including Thomas Van Craen (Triodos); and of course Christel Dumas and Sophie Béreau, our fantastic trio, and Sara Bossaert-Nelson, who keeps things running smoothly day in and day out!   Our next goal is probably to keep expanding our community in the coming months.
