Galapagos and the shocking trade in Sea Cucumbers Everyone must make a living, but when it could result in the destruction of a unique ecosystem for the world, there are limits. Many people haven’t even heard of sea cucumbers; they are echinoderms related to sea urchins and starfish and have the appearance of a large cucumber, slowly moving over the seabed and rocks, sucking up organic matter like a vacuum cleaner and cleaning all the surfaces of waste matter. The fishery for sea cucumbers is open for 2 months every year in Galapagos, with 1 kg of the animal selling for up to 2,000 USD to China. Because of the huge amount of money involved in the trade, fishing continues, despite protests from marine biologists. There used to be 170 sea cucumbers per 100 m2, but now there are less than 7, and the population is on the brink of extinction. The sea cumbers keep the rocks clean, removing sand and detritus, which allows macroalgae, bivalve molluscs, barnacles, and coral to become established. Without the rock ecology, there will be no marine iguanas, sea turtles, seals, or fish. A unique ecosystem is being destroyed, and the loss to the economy from ecotourism will be millions of times greater than the value of the sea cumbers. Carbon offset forests of exotic trees in New Zealand are just another colonial fire. When the vision of this cloak formed in the mind of its maker, Huia still lived on the very land where it was built. They were extinct within 30 years. When this was created by a master weaver, the birds Tui and Kereru and the rainforest that sustained them was plentiful. They cloaked the land. Now only 2% of their former habitat remains outside National Parks. Between 1850 and 1920, millions of hectares of New Zealand native vegetation including forests, were burnt deliberately in fires that ran for years. When this cloak curved on the shoulders of Eliza she knew the future coming to the birds because she saw it happen. She saw the rainforests burnt. She lived where it happened, high up across the valley from Hikurangi. Entire footprints of the traditional Maori food basket of birds, fruit, roots, freshwater fauna, seeds, and fungi - gone. This week I was with extended family, meeting this cloak for the first time. In person. I gave to the museum where it's held, a photo of a Tui taken not far from the place the cloak was made, a place still farmed by the descendants of Eliza, a place where patches of rainforest she ensured were protected still stand. But I came away both happy and sad. For the birds now. The farm where Huia once lived is planted in a forest of pine trees for an international owners carbon offset. Four more have followed suit recently. All approved by the NZ Foreign Investment Org. The forests of pines do not and cannot feed Tui or Kereru. Soon the land of this cloak will be surrounded by Pines and there is no vision from the New Zealand Government to compel these international carbon offset owners to plant native trees too. Scientific and Technical Review Panel of the Convention on Wetlands Technical Report recommendation - include #wetlands in National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans to boost biodiversity and halt wetland loss and degradation. As we find ourselves on the brink of critical decisions for biodiversity, the urgency to address the loss and degradation of wetlands worldwide becomes clearer and more crucial. Wetlands cover only about 6% of the Earth’s surface, yet they support 40% of all known plant and animal species, providing vital services that sustain life. Adopting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) marks a pivotal moment in our collective efforts to reverse biodiversity loss. With its ambitious targets, the KM-GBF offers a pathway toward a 2050 vision where biodiversity is “valued, conserved, restored, and wisely used”, ensuring benefits for all. Wetlands, from peatlands and marshes to estuaries and deltas, are key to achieving these goals due to their role in carbon storage, water purification, and as buffers against natural disasters. The importance of wetlands extends beyond their ecological functions. They underpin a sustainable economic future, enhancing agricultural productivity, supporting fisheries, and offering opportunities for ecotourism. Socially, they are culturally significant areas that provide recreational spaces, support traditional ways of life, and maintain the heritage of local communities. By strategically incorporating wetlands into NBSAPs, we align with global biodiversity targets and strengthen the socio-economic fabric of nations, which should resonate with all stakeholders. As the world celebrates World Nature Conservation Day, I find myself transported back to the picturesque landscapes of Japan, where I bore witness to the awe-inspiring Japanese Daisugi (台杉) technique—a revelation in sustainable forestry. Conversations with seasoned colleagues illuminated the brilliance behind Daisugi's eco-conscious approach. By carefully pruning and nurturing specific branches, the technique allows these resplendent trees to flourish without felling them entirely. In doing so, a delicate balance is struck, enabling us to harness precious wood while preserving the very essence of the forest. The Japanese Daisugi stands as an emblem of sustainable symbiosis—a harmonious dance between human needs and environmental preservation. It beckons us to rethink our relationship with nature, urging us to embrace innovative methods that honor and protect our planet's abundance. #WorldNatureConservationDay

And that's a wrap! The Nature Conservancy showed up in full force this week at Our Ocean Greece. Why? Because a healthy and resilient ocean is absolutely vital for all people on our planet. It makes life on Earth possible and is our greatest ally against climate change. No matter where we live, we are all dependent on the ocean for survival. As part of The Nature Conservancy's ambitious 2030 Goals, we have committed to conserving four billion hectares of the world's ocean—an area approximately four times the size of the United States. This represents one-third of the Global Biodiversity Framework’s ambitious goal of protecting 30 percent of the world’s oceans by 2030. Furthermore, by 2030, The Nature Conservancy aims to: 🪸 protect 30 percent of the world's coral reefs 🐟 improve fisheries management for at least 200 species in 30 geographies 🔍 achieve 100 percent transparency at sea in all global industrial fisheries through electronic monitoring 🦐 improve aquaculture management across 400 million hectares of ocean and coastal area 🌊 help restore and manage 15 million hectares of blue carbon ecosystems, preventing the release of 230 million tons of CO₂ emissions 👥 improve the lives of millions of people throughout the world who depend on the ocean for food, jobs, coastal protection and recreation. The problems facing the ocean are escalating, but solutions do exist. We can still change the course of our future, and the stakes have never been higher.
