It's very common for my US based peers & friends to say 'Europe is out of office for the summer', but is that actually true? How do Americans summer? Are there any differences in a post-pandemic world? Has the summer of 2023 been slower for the ad industry than previous summers? I've had so many conversations about this recently, so I wrote about it in my latest column for the The Media Leader. Let me know what you think. https://lnkd.in/e47BC2tD

Here's a look at the history of #Juneteenth and a recap of how it was celebrated in different parts of the country yesterday. How did you or your business honor and celebrate the day? While not all businesses give employees time off for this federal holiday yet (39% of companies reported time off in 2024 - up 6% from 2023), we can help spread awareness and make sure this number grows each year. #dei #freedom #independence #uniting https://lnkd.in/ehXhuc8S

I help executive teams in high growth companies ($5-150M) conquer stubborn growth problems & speed up great results.
Things I Said THIS WEEK: I always think it’s so interesting that we celebrate on July 4th. We don’t celebrate the ratification of the Constitution. We don’t celebrate the day the first shots were fired, the day the Cornwall surrendered, or the day the treaty was signed. We celebrate the day we DECLARED our freedom. Declarations matter. Me: I’m actually very pragmatic. Friend: That’s what all bloodthirsty people say. It makes a difference when you say yes. Everything isn’t done but you’re IN. And things start to move in you and around you. Commit. Beginning has more power than you know. I hate newsletters. Teams matter because on a good team someone else sees what you cannot, does what you cannot, IS what you cannot be. Too many of us are trying to be all of it. Failing because we can’t see it. And missing the chance to build something great. When I met you, you were working 12-18 hour days regularly and most weekends. And it was never enough. Now you have a life. A stable, healthy business. You got a dog for Pete’s sake! Sometimes we don’t see how far we’ve come unless there is someone around who has seen it first-hand. There are different kinds of freedom. Being free of the ugly, harsh, unreasonable, unfair, and mostly not-useful voice in your head is a way bigger deal than most people realize. “You have been a pivotal. One of the three or four most important people in my life.” — Client #leadership #professionaldevelopment

Suella Braverman's term as the former Home Secretary was a missed opportunity. As a person from an ethnic heritage background in such a high profile role in government could have been a great role model to many by thinking and acting differently. Instead she leant further into the far right narrative targeting minority groups and even making claims that multiculturism has failed in Europe. This despite her own successful trajectory as a daughter of migrants, and the Prime Minister being Rishi Sunak, in Scotland we have Humza Yusuf, the First Minister and in Ireland Leo Varadkar serving as Taoiseach, all like her from from South Asian heritage backgrounds. The value of diversity in senior roles only comes from different thinking not the same old thinking. In the case of Suella Braverman, she carried on the divisive rhetoric we heard from her predecessor, Priti Patel also of South Asian heritage whilst James Cleverly, the 1st Black person in this role, his opening gambit was to repeat the slogan of 'stopping the boats', tackling the symptom rather than the root of the problem. More of the same broken thinking, a strategy that is intended to be the ticket to win the next election by continuing to stoke up fears of immigration and playing to the far right narrative. Outside of politics, the lessons for the wider workplace and HR are clear. 1) Representation does not always mean diverse thinking, with diverse hires conforming to the perceived norm to attain recognition and acceptance. Fear of being a lone voice or wanting to be included can erode the value of being different, being to able to see alternative solutions and options. 2) Allowing unacceptable behaviour to go unchallenged, gives permission to continue unabated not only to the individual but also to others as it sets the tone and culture. Eventually that difficult conversation has to be had, at which point the damage is already done and the fallout is far greater. I shared my thoughts with HR magazine courtesy of Jo Gallacher available at https://lnkd.in/eX-dJMXW #diversity #inclusion #equity #belonging

Monday Morning Mental Motivation 💪🏻🧠 Regardless of your political persuasion, seeing the Northern Ireland Assembly back up and running, is a good thing for everyone in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK. To see two women holding the most senior roles; Michelle O'Neill as First Minister from SF and Emma Little-Pengelly as Deputy First Minster from the DUP, is a first and of course, is progression that was needed. The biggest change, is that this is the first time, in Northern Irelands history, a nationalist background politician has held the post of First Minister. Having grown up during the troubles, in a majority nationalist area, seeing the horrific effects of divided communities, to see a democratically elected First Minister from this background, is progressive. There will be rhetoric thrown around by the media, including fear mongering etc., but as Michelle has stated in her opening speech, she is keen to represent all sides, all people, with all traditions being treated equally. Being from Belfast, with friends and family from all traditions and backgrounds, I can categorically state, everyone will just be happy to see things up and running again with a functioning government. It is motivational to see the progress back home has made since I was a kid, that we can actually use a democratic process to represent the people. Times move on, people move, countries move on to new beginnings. I say this all the time, no matter how bad your situation is, no matter how impossible something may seem, trust me and all my generation from Northern Ireland, as bad as you think it is, it can and will get better, but you need to take action, work together, to make things improve. The same too goes for your career, speak to Cavehill Consulting regarding Your New Beginning... #Progress #Democratic #Future #Growth #CavehillConsulting #TeamCC
