ASHE ANNUAL RECAP 2023: Where does one begin? "When a team trusts one another, they become unstoppable. Trust is the foundation upon which success is built, and it has the power to transform ordinary teams into extraordinary ones. At the recent ASHE annual conference in San Antonio, Texas, I had the privilege of witnessing the incredible impact of trust firsthand. From the moment I stepped into the conference hall, the air was filled with a sense of camaraderie and collaboration. Attendees from different backgrounds, industries, and expertise came together with a shared purpose - to learn, grow, and connect. The magic happened when these individuals, who were often strangers at first, embraced vulnerability and opened up to one another. They shared their challenges, their successes, and their dreams. Through this honest exchange of experiences, ideas, and insights, trust began to flourish. As trust grew, so did the level of collaboration and innovation. Teams that trusted one another were more willing to take risks, experiment with new approaches, and tackle complex problems together. They leveraged their diverse perspectives, knowledge, and skills to create solutions that were truly groundbreaking. So, as we reflect on the ASHE annual conference, let's take a moment to appreciate the incredible power of trust. Conferences. Are they 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒉 𝒊𝒕 anymore? (spoiler alert, there is a question for you at the end. We need your insights so please comment!) I was unable to attend this past conference in DC as I had much more important things to do (think beach, to many drinks, ☀ ) but like many in the space, I have been chatting with a lot of attendees the past few days. The common theme..... it just 𝐚𝐢𝐧'𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞. Don't get me wrong, it seems like the dinners and seeing friends is still great (I mean when isn't that?)..... but the conferences themselves just seem to be lacking true value. I feel like each year it's the same thing. There are some interesting topics being "covered" by some really awesome people. Then you go to listen and.... it just sounds like the elevator pitch. I had two people who used #compliancemonitoring as an example. They went to a break out segment and it basically said, "yea, you should do monitoring. If you don't you could get yourself in trouble"...... ummmm, yep, I get it but 𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐋 𝐌𝐄 𝐇𝐎𝐖 do we do it. What should I look at. What are you looking at. Why? So this is my long rant to say I want to do better. There is nothing any of us are doing that is so proprietary that we can't share the stuff we looking at. I want to to get tactical with some folks. I want to get into the weeds. The ol' nitty gritty as they say. What I ask from you is to give me the stuff you want to get into. What are you aching to know? I will spend the time finding the experts and we will deep dive into these topics. We won't say do monitoring. We will tell you how to do monitoring. Talk is cheap. I want to give you the deets (I think that's slang for details but don't quote me eh). Y'all know I love the #monitoring #hcpengagments and #transparency reporting worlds but if there is other tangential interests, let's do it. Comment below on some things you really want to know and get specific. I 𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐋 find experts in the space and we 𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐋 get to the details on the hows and whys. Our lives will change when we… ❌ Stop looking from a place of what hasn't happened yet ✅ Start looking from the place of what we would love to happen While having clarity about what we want is important, There are other crucial steps… 💡 Imagination We don't get what we want. We get who we are. Imagination allows us to transcend our limitations, And become the person we wish to become. ⚡️ Energy Often, we approach our desire from the place of not having it. Yet, life responds to our energy. The energy we radiate, Determines what we get to experience. To get what we want, we got to approach it from the place of abundance. 🚀Aligned Actions There is a difference between a busy action and aligned action. Busy action is busy, And may or may not produce the desired results 💁. Aligned action is empowered by the life's intelligence 💫, And always drives momentum towards the desired outcome. Conferences are hard for me - I get overwhelmed; the energy simultaneously can wind me up and completely drain me; if I'm not careful, I will rework my entire business model and actions; I can feel as if I'm standing too close to a really busy highway with ideas and delight whizzing by with such velocity that I have to squeeze my eyes closed. Conferences are rejuvenating and inspiring for me - I am freed by hearing new perspectives that break me out of rigid holds on my thinking; reconnecting with my colleagues and friends is heart-filling and reassuring; meeting new colleagues expands my mind and experience; the options expand before me, and I'm reinvigorated by the new possibilities. Key differentiator? - my mastermind group. We meet and focus before the conference, touch base during, and process and refocus at the end. They support, challenge, suggest, and check in. There's a flow of reminding each other that we're awesome, reinforced with new ideas and perspectives to try, and appropriately punctuated with retorts to snap us out of old habits that no longer serve us. What do you need? How are you going to implement that? By when? In what fundamental ways will that serve you? and Did you get what you need? - an important reminder and grounding question to take control of our processes and ask for what serves us. I've had several mastermind groups through the years. They are essential to integrating my personal and professional lives, grounding and challenging. Birth of the Modern Conference Recently I attended a conference that’s going to change its entire industry. It remains nameless here as I don’t want to come off as shilling for it but if you follow my feed, you know the conference I’m referring to. What makes this conference so unique is that it proves what I’ve known for decades – the power of any conference lies within the attendees, not solely the talking heads on stage. Indeed, there are keynote speakers and the like, but it centers on peer to peer sharing, Case in point, I led a panel discussion where one panelist mentioned their organization was looking into ‘X’ company for a certain type of training that interested them. When we turned the discussion over to the audience, a member took the floor stating clearly and emphatically about his going down that path and finding it less than advertised. Now, I’m sure ‘X’ company has quality programming but having an immediate discussion about it certainly lessened the learning curve for many of the members in attendance. And in doing so, saved valuable dollars in the process as we all know that in business, time is indeed money. This is just one example of the impactful communication both shared and received throughout the three days. So, if you’re wanting to win within your industry, look for a conference that brings together the winners from that industry; then values them enough to formally seek their guidance and expertise, not just leave it to random networking. But if you can’t find one in your industry that does, you can always do what my friends did…start their own. (To great success!) The risk of 'groupthink' and the importance of diversity, in all its multifaceted aspects - this was just one of the aspects that our CEO, Helen Spencer-Oatey, discussed yesterday with Sue Bull in the latest IIRSM webinar. Not being open to the different ideas and different ways of doing things that a diverse group of people can offer can have serious consequences. For instance, it had a major negative impact on the UK government's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. In our book 'Global Fitness for Global People' Peter Franklin Domna Lazidou we explore this issue and quote from a UK government report. The report argues that the UK did not take enough advantage of the learning and experience being generated in other countries, notably in East Asia, and it identified groupthink as a key contributor to this. It quotes the former Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Dame Sally Davies, as saying: "Quite simply, we were in groupthink. ... We need to open up and get some more challenge into our thinking about what we are planning for." In light of this and other evidence, the report concludes that groupthink had a significant negative impact, resulting in the government not being open to approaches being taken elsewhere. So the key is: not just diversity in numbers, but openness to different ideas and ways of doing things.
