Why you should focus on value creation and not stealing market share in #travelretail
Some brands might focus on their competitors. It is all about stealing market share from another brand.
Other brands, those focused on the category, will focus on growing the pie. Growing the pie means that if the whole category does well and you retain your market share, you do well and everyone does well.
Imagine you are Brand X. You offer 50% margin.
Your competitor is Brand Y. They offer 55% margin.
You decide to discount your price to steal share from Y. This helps you, but the retailer makes less money. Even if you offer a rebate to help them retain % margin, the retailer is likely to lose out if you are purely stealing sales from Brand Y instead of gaining incremental sales.
In short, retailers do not want brands focusing on taking sales from each other. In doing so, they lose out in more ways than one. Cheaper products means less cash margin, higher stock turn, increased costs for stock handling...
OK - reality check here. Brands naturally will want to do better than their competition. In doing so, they will increase their market share.
However......
If gaining market share happens to be an "unexpected by product" then so be it.
NEVER focus on your competitors. Always focus on how you are going to bring NEW shoppers into the store and getting buyers to spend more.
You are helping the retailer to drive their growth, not just yours.
Tomorrow, I am back in an airport and will be checking out the stores. Update to follow...
Until then.....
