When we meet with Texas districts about Tech Apps curriculum, we always get this question. ❓ "What assessment practices are used in Ellipsis curriculum?" Assessments are essential for providing actionable insights for student learning - and they're not one size fits all. That's why Ellipsis uses a variety of assessment types, and provides grade-tracking tools and rubrics to support consistent and equitable grading. In Ellipsis courses, you'll find: ➡️ Self-Assessments ➡️ Exit Tickets ➡️ Formative Assessments ➡️ Performance Tasks (our take on summative assessments) Learn more about each assessment type (and how they work in the classroom) in our latest blog post.

My first gig in the EdTech space was as an assessment writer. I wrote multiple-choice questions for all levels of K-12 science because - well, that's what people want. I started out ok at it, but in the end, I got really good at it. And, I developed a serious dislike for this form of assessment in the process. When it comes to multiple-choice questions, here's what I have learned. 🧠 It is impossibly hard to develop really good multiple-choice questions, and yet, as teachers, we are very rarely trained in this. I did not get formal education in the art of writing multiple-choice questions until I was a doctoral student. 🧠 Even though multiple-choice questions are notoriously bad at producing quality insights into students' learning, we can easily become too reliant on this form of assessment and the vast amounts of quantitative data it can produce. 🧠 Given their resemblance to the questions students will see on standardized tests, multiple-choice questions are often used as a proxy for more authentic assessment practices, and they are often given too late. Remember - your data is only as good as the tool you used to collect it. That's why we at Ellipsis Education focused on quality assessments, which produce quality insights into students' learning. Check out our latest blog post, which helps explain how we handled assessment (without multiple-choice questions) in our Texas Tech Apps curriculum.

Are you sick of always having to follow a scripted curriculum?? As a teacher, you probably want some autonomy over the lessons you use in your own classroom. And yet, it seems like everything is scripted: math, literacy, science, even social-emotional learning! Now, I understand why schools invest in these scripted programs. They may even think they are doing you a favor... but, let's face it: relying solely on a boxed, scripted program is just not doing the trick. This is just ONE of the mistakes I tackle inside my FREE Class, How to Transform Your Classroom into a Place of Calm, Connection & Creativity. If you're like the many teachers I talk to, you're kind of sick of getting bogged down by program after program. You want to be creative in your classroom; make some decisions that make sense for your students and for you. That's why we have a system of infusing and integrating creative social-emotional strategies into your day. That just makes sense, right? You shouldn't have to read from a script to teach a kid about resilience. You should be equipped with strategies to help that kid develop those skills through classroom experiences. Learning Experience Designer | Learner | I create learning to fit an ever-changing world of learners.
Hey, edtech. I have a secret for you. The thing teachers want most... is for everything to play nicely. Easy access... Actual language of the standards and classrooms. No cute stuff that needs extra explanation... If they are writing an essay, call it an essay... Less places to check for grades, add the grades, evaluate the work... play nice! I have to collect scores from one place to manually enter into another place to then sync with another place. When the score from one sync to the next doesn't show up on the SIS guess who needs to go figure it out. Let's be real, teachers will use the systems, programs, and activities that play well with their SIS and LMS. If your program can't play nicely, we won't use it. Some days I wish we were back to keeping a handwritten gradebook where we did the math to bubble the grades at the quarter... as a non-math person, it was easier and less time-consuming than the mess I am dealing with today. Ok, rant over... until the next kid asks... #playnice
