At my internship with Weber State Athletics I worked with people across different departments to set up for game days. Game days require good communication and teamwork. During game day we communicate with coaches to make sure things are set up how they would like them. This experience is teaching me about what goes on behind the scenes of sporting events. Meet Ryan Heinzerling '24, an English and Political Science major, making waves as a Corporate Partners Intern with the New York Mets! ⚾️ For Ryan, the allure of the sports industry and the power it holds was irresistible. The passion and love that sports enthusiasts pour into their favorite games gave new meaning to office work for Ryan. As an English major, the business world might have felt unfamiliar, but when viewed through the lens of sports, everything clicked into place. And to top it all off, it's with the Mets, a team he's been a diehard fan of since childhood, bonding over that shared passion with his dad. 💼 One key takeaway from the internship for Ryan has been the importance of adaptability. Entering a role with little prior experience can be nerve-wracking, but interning is all about being a sponge and absorbing as much knowledge as possible. This lesson resonates beyond sports, proving invaluable in any career situation. 🚀 This internship has pushed Ryan to recognize the immense value of seizing opportunities. As an intern, you have the choice to stay quietly at your desk or step out of your comfort zone. Initially, breaking the ice and meeting new people can be daunting, but the rewards of learning about others' lives and making memorable connections are immeasurable. 💡The best advice Ryan has received revolves around three crucial career buckets: industry, specialty, and location. Identifying the industry, such as sports, is a great starting point, followed by narrowing down your specific niche within it. Summer Placements...Sports Biz Program Olin Business School at Washington University With hopes still of reaching our record mark from Summer 2023 by June 1, happy to share that the Business of Sports program in the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis is now up to 28 students who have found either Summer 2024 internships or entry-level placements in sports and entertainment. As I review how these opportunities were sourced, 8 stemmed from direct emails to me from industry employers seeking talent, 6 were through TeamWork Online, 4 were through family/friends, 2 were through LinkedIn, 2 were through team websites, and the others didn't specify. That we have placed nearly 60 students in the last 2 summers across various sports industry internships and entry-level jobs is truly amazing, and makes me feel very lucky to play a mentorship role with such a talented and dynamic group of young people. 25 different companies...12 properties/teams, 9 agencies, 1 speedway, 1 tech company, and 2 "others". 8 companies we've placed students in the past, so 17 new companies we are engaging with this summer. And we have alumni connections at 8 of the 25 companies listed below. Connections, connections...and then more connections. That's the WashU way. By doing an internship with the Snowbasin Race Team, you learn to analyze certain mistakes that the athletes make when racing and one of them is making a turn with your upper body. You want your upper body to remain as stable as possible. If you don't, it forces you to have most of your pressure on your inside ski which can make it difficult to turn and cause you to lose control of your skis. Building connections within the sports industry can be challenging, especially for students who may not have access to relevant networks or events.The sports industry is dynamic and constantly evolving, which can make it challenging for sports management students to stay updated on current trends and practices.The sports industry is highly competitive, and you may face challenges securing employment after graduation, especially without significant experience or a strong network. Addressing these issues may require a combination of proactive networking, seeking out internships or volunteer opportunities, staying updated on industry trends, and seeking mentorship from professionals in the field. As I find myself in Italy, I would like to say that summer is over, but given the 28 degrees of heat, I am basking in the warm autumn sun writing about how summer is over without feeling that it is over; at least according to the atmospheric condition. Nevertheless, I am writing this post as a follow up to the Pulitzer winning piece of text I published at the beginning of the summer, where I had outlined my plans for the Summer. No fancy internships (🙅), just raw and smoked fish, and university. I have now completed that chapter in my life, and would like to sharer a few lessons I learnt during the summer: 1. Screaming ‘they don’t know me son’ at dead fish while trying to filet for an impatient customer will not impress anyone: employee of the month ! 2. In Finland people do eat fish other than salmon (and apparently there is a difference between Finnish salmon and Norwegian salmon). 3. If you have the ‘trainee’ tag on, customers will have mercy for you, even when you haven’t learn to filet or recognise different types of fish in 3 months of work (who’s gonna carry the boats?) 4. The Information Technology Program I (hope) completed this summer has been extremely eye opening: first, I have realised that digital marketing studies are something I like and would like to continue in the future. Shame I didnt know that before completing a degree in international relations, and starting a new one in Economics. MR=MC. I am happy that I have helped people pick the right fish to eat, stacked the shelves of the supermarket in a way that would’ve made anyone want to get lost in the meat and cheese section marvelling and the beautiful ‘facing’ of products provided by yours truly. I am also extremely grateful for the people that I worked with in ITP, for the amazing lecturers that made the 9am’s really worth it, and to my PlayStation, for staying by my side and voluntarily keeping me company at 2am while undecided whether I should play NHL15 or Fifa20. #takemeback As for what happens now, I will start writing a book about the primitive desire to be a part of the masses, and how that instinct has been exploited in social media marketing. Okay, I’ll give you one guess WHERE we’re going to be for our awards ceremony tomorrow !! But you may need more than one guess WHY… At The 10,000 Interns Foundation we celebrate our interns everyday, it's why we do this work. But once a year we gather for a very special celebration when we ask our incredible participating organisations to nominate their most impactful interns, the talent that changed their organisations and left a mark on all their colleagues (and often go on to become full-time employees too!) Honestly, getting to read these nominations is one of the great highlights and privileges of my role. So, each year we strive to take this incredible talent somewhere they’ve never been before. And we have also started to use these awards to celebrate a sector new to our programme as well. Why? Well, most of you will know that our 10,000 Black Interns programme started out in Investment Management back in 2020. But you may not know that we now have internships opportunities available across 35 different sectors all over the UK And we believe that the diversity of talent across our programmes richly deserves diverse opportunities That’s why last year we celebrated the Arts, with our awards held at Royal Academy of Arts, following which we more than quadrupled our opportunities in the Arts and Culture sector This year we will be celebrating Sport. And we couldn’t think of a better venue than Emirates Stadium, home to the diverse and richly talented Arsenal F.C football teams, and the Arsenal Foundation. As an ex-athlete myself I believe so deeply in the power of Sport. When you train for sport you take your destiny into your own hands. Alcaraz won Wimbledon at age 20! I started playing tennis at 35 and came second in my local club's tennis league at 39. I doubt our tennis careers will look the same😂 But there is an important lesson here: 👉 Start early and reap the rewards Students who started preparing for their IB job in 1st year have a HUGE advantage over their peers who started later. 1st year: Secure multiple spring weeks 2nd year: Secure summer internship 3rd year: Get the full time job, sometimes raking in £100k plus in the first year (As long as you impress) Even missing out on year 1 can make it 5x harder in year 2. Banks want candidates as pre-trained as possible. Earlier you start, the bigger the opportunities.

All Recreational Therapists that have earned the credentials Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) have been interns before. Entry into the Recreational Therapy field needs to be reformed so students do not have to pay tuition to complete an internship away from their university campus. The National Council on Therapeutic Recreational Certification (NCTRC) should place the needs of incoming professionals above any university’s or employer’s financial motives. See how ludicrous this appears: pay $10,000.00+ for tuition to not go to the college you just overpaid in order to work ~600 non-paid hours somewhere else, then pay $450.00 for a chance to enter the field. Our soon-to-be graduates should be boosted into professionalism, rather than having to dig themselves into a deep financial hole, or into mental exhaustion, just to get there. The excuse, “We all had to do it” is bogus. … Ironic how Recreational Therapy is supposed to be a field that cares deeply about mental health and wellness, but Recreational Therapy academia and professional organizations do not apply ethical codes of nonmaleficence to students or interns. It’s important as professionals to be cognizant of the circumstances of interns - All the more reason to give our interns the best possible learning experiences. Interns should be compensated by the host for the contributions made by the intern. This year, Indiana home and community-based Recreational Therapy providers formed a task force to help Indiana Medicaid determine new reimbursement rates (compensation). Only one of the providers mentioned the costs associated with hosting interns and the need for interns to be compensated - Necessary for growing our workforce in order to reduce service disparities. If you are an intern, or will soon be an intern, please stand up for yourself. Choose internship hosts that advocate for you as an intern from the beginning - Do not choose to intern for organizations that simply use your free labor as a cheap recruitment tool to funnel you into employment or contracting just to grow their organization. A big red flag is if an internship host waits until the conclusion of your internship to present a job offer - Interns prefer to know where and what their professional role will be in advance! Hold the organization you are interning with accountable. Please help improve your internship organization with your latest and greatest educations! You are the future! A rare personal post… I have just been shortlisted for a management award and couldn’t be prouder…! But this award is not with Virtual Internships, it is as co-manager of my son Hugo’s Under Seven’s Football team, “The Lions”. Jamie Kyte and I have been managing a fantastic team of six year olds playing their first season in the Watford Friendly League - and it has been an incredibly rewarding experience. There is nothing I look forward to more, after a full week of work, than to watch Hugo and the boys, loyally cheered on by Hugo’s brother (and team mascot) Oscar. The team have faced some stiff competition but they have developed their own skills of teamwork, resilience and leadership - which will be great assets in later life. This is what the club said: "Both Jamie & Dan are only at the beginning stage of their Lions journey, but as we all know, if you haven’t got the foundations correct, there’s a high probability things will crumble as the journey progresses. Every boy in their sizeable squad loves what the guys have created. The smiles, both on the pitch and on the sidelines, at each training session and each game is wonderful to see. Their results haven’t been bad either. Played 22. Won 13: Lost 5 & drawn 4, scoring 109 goals in the process in their first season."
