We hear a lot about equity and belonging but what does that mean? How is it actioned? The youth we serve often talk about being excluded, feeling lonely because they've been rejected so many times it hurts to even think about human connection. YAIJ is a collective of Black neurodiverse youth, racialized neurodiverse youth who want to connect, be themselves, create spaces to live a positive and healthy life. Do youth have to struggle to fit in where they were never a thought to begin with? Is belonging a right or something nice to have happen? Can we have equity without belonging? We're figuring out together. We welcome authentic partnerships with orgs also willing to ask some tough questions and work with YAIJ youth to find solutions. When striving for equity, allyship is just the beginning. To truly foster change, we can start with allyship, become accomplices, and, eventually, co-conspirators. But what do these terms entail? Most people start as allies- standing in solidarity with marginalized communities, educating themselves, and speaking out against injustices. An accomplice leverages their privilege to disrupt systems of oppression, creating opportunities for the marginalized and holding themselves accountable. But a co-conspirator actively works to dismantle oppressive systems, challenging the status quo and committing to lasting change alongside marginalized communities. Reflect on how you can transition to co-conspiratorship in your life by interrogating your current understandings and actions. It might involve leaning into discomfort, and that's ok! By actively participating in dismantling systemic oppression, we foster tight-knit communities where everyone has a seat at the table.
