Future Of Work Founder | Keynote Speaker | Facilitator | Cofounder of The Future Kind | Host of Virgin Startup’s Changemakers
📣 Your environment matters 📣 Let's talk about the power of our surroundings and how they shape our journey as founders. Here’s the TLDR: when our work environment matches our needs, it can: 🚀 boost our productivity ❤️🔥 nurture our wellbeing 👩🎨 fuel our creativity But when our surroundings aren’t giving, it can negatively impact all 3. I know because I’ve felt it. I had a wake-up call when I became a founder. My home became my full-time workspace, but it was far from the inspiring haven I needed. Stress and distraction were unwelcome coworkers - and let’s face it, being a founder creates enough stress and frustration, so I definitely didn’t need it coming from my home, too! Fast forward to today, and my perspective on my work environment has completely changed. 👀 This year, my partner and I were fortunate enough to renovate our home, turning it into a space that gives us energy and inspo. It hasn’t all been plain sailing (obvs, renovation rarely is), but the results are worth every spec of dust and moment of disruption. Here's a little sneak peek of our new space, for those who are interested. 🏡 And here's an open invitation to fellow founders and friends. If you're ever in the area (North East London), drop me a DM and come over for a coffee and a chat ☕🗣️ let’s share biz stories and inspire each other 🫶 #founderstories #workenvironment #renovationjourney

⚖️Striking the right balance between work and home life 🏠💼 Business owners, I’m sure you’ll agree it’s not always easy running your business and managing your team while balancing the needs of your home life and family. 👨👩👦👦 Since having my two boys, I’ve learned (and am continuing to do so every day!) how to better balance the needs of work with family. I wouldn’t be able to do it without: 👨👩My People: creating a sense of ownership within the team is integral so everyone understands their responsibilities and feels empowered to carry out their work 🌟Team Structure: we’ve strategically structured our team so individuals aren’t having to do absolutely everything. Dedicated administrators, assistants, leasing and inspections officers means everyone focuses on one area of the business, so they can perform to the best of their ability and provide a higher quality service 🤖Technology: utilising cloud based software allows our team to work from anywhere. We all know that life happens, from COVID to sick kids, and providing the opportunity for both me and my team to have flexibility with how they conduct their work keeps us efficient. How do you balance work and family?⚖️ #worklifebalance

Opinion: Part of the reason work, as a way of life, is under threat is because of the significant shift in our understanding of home ownership. Once, it was seen as a goal attainable by all, writes columnist Sean Kelly. Now that it has become unaffordable to almost everyone without inherited wealth, the connection between work and home ownership has snapped. This weakens the place of both in our society, which, in turn, weakens the place of big business, which no longer provides a reliable path to middle-class stability. Engagement Insights & People Strategies | Measuring & Improving Engagement | Creating Communities | Best Companies
Is it time we stopped referring to our workforce as a “family”? 👨👩👧👧🤔 The idea of considering our organisations as families has long been associated with trust and unity, but it seems this phrase is starting to fall out of favour… Airbnb's CEO, Brian Chesky, recently said that employers should never think of their workforce as a family, because when you’re forced to make business decisions at the expense of your staff you damage your culture and break the trust you’ve fostered. Other experts suggest that this notion can bring with it false expectations and strained relationships which are often one sided between management and employees, with many businesses that describe themselves as a family associated with higher ups demanding staff to work late and meet unrealistic deadlines in the name of supporting each other, while the employees doing the work get no support at all. It’s not just the employer either; boundaries can easily become blurred for the employees too, and they may have a higher expectations that anything they ask of will be approved, such as holiday or flexible working requests. It’s a pretty interesting debate, and I have to admit that I always quite liked the idea of my work fam - I guess when things are going well, it's great and we foster a sense of trust and camaraderie! But does the familial analogy become problematic when tough business decisions must be made? Chesky defiantly sums up his view “The inherent unconditional support within a family is incompatible with the conditional nature of employment, which includes policies, expectations, and performance metrics.” No changing his mind is there! What do you think? #employeeengagement #workfamily #business

Nashville was ranked the #1 Worst Commute in the U.S. I used to spend at least an hour each way driving 22 miles to an office on the opposite side of town, 5 days a week with 2 small children at home. If it rained or snowed, that commute was 2-3 hours. Twice in my working life I got stuck on Nashville interstates for over 7 hours because of snowfall at rush hour. Could I have moved to be closer to work? Sure but that would come at a cost in other ways. I had to live where I lived to be near by in-laws for the child care support. Moving wasn't an option because of that. Now it's no longer an option because my kids having their "village" around them is more important to me than any job. The kids have afterschool activities that keeps me running another 3-5 hours most evenings. I haven't worked in an office cubicle setting consistently now for over a decade. I can't mentally or physically go back. I believe that relationships can easily be built remotely. The occasional meeting in the office or an off-site is definitely a fun thing to do to help build those relationships but they aren't really necessary in my field. I have some great friends that I have worked with that I have never met or only met once in person. If a job can be done remotely, I don't understand why you wouldn't allow your employees to save hours of their day, the cost savings and sanity for work-life balance. Don't offer me food to commute either, I'd rather starve than spend 10+ hours a week in my car commuting so that you can physically see me type on a computer or speak in a headset. 🤣 #worklifebalance #remotework #corporateculture #employeefirst https://lnkd.in/edJsm8PD

Technology and Digital Marketing Recruiter @ Knak Digital | Fractional Talent Acquisition | Hitting Hiring Roadblocks? I can help 🙋🏻♀️ Job Search Advisor | Baltimore & D.C. metro 🔊 (Riv-Knack)
OK, what company sponsored this pro-commuter article? I kid, as I chat with many people who enjoy, even deliberately seek out, jobs with onsite office options. But is there really a silver lining for those long-distance commutes (hour+)? A few points raised in this Fortune article: 🧠 Mindset Pep-Rally: People are using the time to prepare and prioritize their day. A Chicago VP of a transportation company was quoted saying, "When I get in I’ve had over an hour where I’m pretty focused, I’ve had time to prioritize my day and to think about the first two or three things that are going to be on my list" 💰 Financial benefits: Commute costs 6k a year, but that offsets the city vs suburbs cost of living. 👀 Visibility: Employees who are "out of sight, out of mind" miss out on team collaboration or face-time with leadership and management. ➡️In the DC metro area, a long commute has always been a topic on the table. Even commuting 15 miles on the beltway can take an hour+. However, I spoke to many who would opt for public transportation so they could use that time for work (or pleasure), rather than focus on driving. As fully remote options continue to dwindle, commuting back to the office has become a stark reality for many. If you are an ultra-commuter, do you perceive the travel time as a benefit to your career? https://lnkd.in/df2TQ6vs
