Despite concerns about inflation and rising interest rates, SMB leaders felt more optimistic about the national economic outlook in Q2 2023, according to the latest Small Business Index. Most small businesses report strong overall health (59%), increased staffing, and satisfactory cash flow. Just less than half (49%) of the #smallbusinessowners surveyed in the second Small Business Financial Confidence Report from American Express say they’re “very confident” in their ability to make sound growth decisions, down from 54% in the inaugural survey released last spring. The reasons given for the decline in confidence were: The current economy: 80%, with 35% particularly concerned about inflation, and 72% worried inflation will be worse or the same in 2024. It’s #NationalSmallBusinessWeek, and AEO has released its “Small Business Facts” sheet with a wealth of data on how small businesses help shape the U.S. economy, and what we need to do to support their success. Some key findings: • 99.9% of all businesses (33M businesses) are small businesses • 96% of all businesses (32M businesses) have fewer than 10 employees. This segment of small business is driving new firm creation. • Small businesses employ nearly half of the private sector workforce • Businesses with fewer than 10 employees account for one-quarter of the U.S. workforce • Small businesses with fewer than 10 employees generate more than $4 trillion in annual sales and receipts, more than the combined output of two of the largest sectors of the U.S. economy, Information and Construction.
