VP, Search

We have an incredible opportunity with AI to help people with their information needs in entirely new ways. It was an honor to represent so much incredible work across the Search team at I/O today and show how, with generative AI, Google will be able to do more of the searching for you. We’re so excited for Search to enter the Gemini era, and combine our decades of investment in Search with the agentive capabilities of Gemini models. Starting this week, we’re bringing AI Overviews to Search for everyone in the U.S. With AI Overviews, people are finding Search more helpful than ever, they’re using Search more and they’re visiting a wide range of websites to dig deeper. And this is just the start. We also shared how: ➡️ We’re tackling increasingly more complex questions with multi-step reasoning. So you don’t have to break your question into multiple queries– you can really just ask for what you need, all in one go, and Google will do the researching for you. ➡️ We’re unlocking an entirely new way to search with video, so you can truly ask questions about what you see– like troubleshooting a gadget– and Google can figure it out for you and provide an AI Overview. ➡️ We’re using AI to reimagine how we’re organizing the results page, dynamically grouping results on the fly that helps you easily explore the breadth of what’s out there. Especially when you’re looking for inspiration, Google can do the brainstorming with you. Search in the Gemini era is truly our most exciting chapter yet. Read more here ➡️

We still have to double check the information that AI generates because of what they term hallucinations or incorrect answers. So you have to be an expert in that field to reject false information. It gets worse if the sources for the answer are not provided because you can’t verify if it’s a reputable source.

Just stopping by this comment thread to make sure everyone knows how to get rid of this feature that nobody asked for and nobody wants! https://www.theverge.com/24162621/google-search-ai-overviews-get-rid-of

It’s one thing to have a tool that checks your spelling and grammar, and quite another to write an entire paper for you with little to no thought or checking on your part. As a teacher, nothing frustrates me more than students blindly copying and pasting what AI generated for them and trying to pass it off as their work. I can just imagine how well that would go over when I go to write my dissertation. Analyze, think, and create for ourselves? What archaic ideas! 🙄😞

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm certain that Google rolled out AI answers twice now in search results and both times had to turn AI off for giving wrong, bad and incorrect nformation.! ?

The enshittification of search continues unabated.
