AI Overviews are coming to our search results—Google’s response to the unprecedented rise of OpenAI’s LLM, which took them off guard last year. I’m incredibly excited about what this means for the evolution of search. As a user, let’s be honest: the quality of search has deteriorated. When was the last time you searched for a recipe and spent 20 minutes reading the backstory to Auntie Jenny’s Cottage Pie? You most likely scrolled past all the content and adverts to find the recipe, which was surrounded by even more adverts. This new way to search will disrupt all of that and bring what many have been using ChatGPT or Copilot for, to the masses. This will be a widespread upgrade to what people can do when they search, allowing for more complex questions and responses. The knee-jerk reaction might be to suggest this will be terrible for SEOs, but I disagree. Yes, it will likely disrupt certain industries. But if you’re creating unique, useful, and real experiences or content that can’t be replicated by a generic AI response, then why wouldn’t Google want to help people find that? Sites will still need to be crawled. Businesses will still need to be found. Goods and services will still need to be purchased. Sources will still need to be cited. News will still need to be read. Analysis will still need to be understood. The way we optimise and help businesses understand search will become even more dynamic, augmented, and sophisticated, just like the way people will be searching. Beware: We still have to double check the answers that AI generates because of what they term hallucinations or incorrect answers. So you have to be an expert in that field to reject false information. It gets worse if the sources for the answer are not provided because you can’t verify if it’s a reputable source.

The fundamental flaw of the Google SGE AI system based on the Google VP Search post below: "AI Overviews are built to only show information that is backed up by top web results." The design is based on the false assumption that Google's page-ranking algorithm favors accurate results and not SEO-gamed garbage. Google Search has been broken for some time, and now the company is relying on those gamed and spam-filled results to feed its new AI model. Google's AI language model can still make inaccurate conclusions about the "accurate" data, confabulating erroneous information in a flawed summary of the information available. Generally ignoring the folly of basing its AI results on a broken page-ranking algorithm, Google's blog post again, posted by the VP, Search below instead attributes the commonly circulated errors to several other factors, including users making nonsensical searches, which is only partially true "aimed at producing erroneous results." Google does admit faults with the AI model, like misinterpreting queries, misinterpreting "a nuance of language on the web," and lacking sufficient high-quality information on certain topics. If you are going to use Google search and think you can trust the results, especially in healthcare, be aware that you will likely see an AI response that contains harmful misinformation served by Google.

🚀 2024 just got a whole lot more exciting! 🚀 Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) is finally live after a year in Search Labs, now branded as Google AI Overview. I've been testing SGE in the US and India for a year, and I can't tell you how thrilled I am about this roll-out. I even bet a colleague that SGE would launch in March 2024… okay, I was off by two months! 😅 Google has found that with AI Overviews, people use Search more frequently and are more satisfied with their results. 📈 🔍 Search in the Gemini ERA: What does it mean for you? If you've attended one of my workshops, this won't be new to you, but here’s a summary anyway: 🗓️ AI Overviews launched in the US on May 14, 2024, with more countries to follow throughout the year. 🌍 By the end of 2024, AI Overviews will reach over a billion people in Google Search. 📉 Paid Ads are still present, but they’re pushed further down the page, as seen in SGE testing. 💬 AI Overviews encourage conversation, returning more personalized results. 🧩 Google can now answer complex queries like ten questions in one search. You can ask detailed questions with all their sub-questions and get an AI Overview in seconds. ⚡ With multi-step reasoning, it provides personalized answers swiftly. For example, you can ask: “Find the best yoga or pilates studios in Boston and show me details on their intro offers, and walking time from Beacon Hill.” 🧘♀️🏃♂️ “All you have to do is ASK. Google will do the searching, researching, planning, brainstorming, and so much more.” So, what does this mean for your business? What does this mean for the future of search?
