How can we be led by our values and beliefs in our work? I've just been listening to an expert by experience and a clinical psychology trainee talking about the experience of systems when facing homelessness. The expert by experience described how it can take years to get the help that makes a difference but even then, you can't always get the help you need. The feeling of being bounced around the system which is often disconnected and labels you with a number of disconnected problems. . However, the expert also challenged us all to find large or small ways to bring positive change by our actions and the way we engage with others. The clinical psychology trainee has been interviewing policy makers, including MPs and civil servants, who describe a sense of powerlessness even when we might see them as in positions of power to bring or facilitate change. Those interviewed spoke of their values and beliefs which revealed their understanding of homelessness being a systemic problem more than an individual problem. At this point, someone in the audience asked: 'Is good system leadership therefore about nurturing and enabling the art of the possible and how things can change in a collaborative way?' My thoughts then turned to how we let ourselves be led by our values and beliefs and work together to make change possible. I wondered what difference it would make in our meetings and teams if we started by discussing our shared values and beliefs, before we get in to the nitty gritty of 'solving a problem' or 'making a decision'? Would be see more possibilities or push ourselves beyond the 'easy' or quick fix or a rehash of what we've done before. The network meetings run by the Homeless Community of Practice based here at the University of Southampton bring such a broad range of people together that I learn so much and am challenged each time we meet. If you have any interest in the area of homelessness and collaborative working, I really encourage you to join us. "I advocate for a reformed approach to justice-involved youth. Here are the key strategies from my perspective: Community-Based Programs: Let’s shift from detention to community-based programs. These focus on education, mental health services, and skill development, aiding societal reintegration. Culturally Relevant Rehabilitation: Our programs should be culturally sensitive, addressing the unique needs and experiences of each individual. Family Involvement: Actively involving the family in the rehabilitation process provides emotional support and stability. Education and Vocational Training: Quality education and vocational training equip young men and women with skills for a successful future and reduce reoffending. Mental Health Services: Integrated mental health services address issues and support overall well-being. Restorative Justice Programs: Programs focusing on restorative justice promote empathy and responsibility. Workforce Development and Employability: Incorporating workforce development initiatives and creating pathways to college and employment opportunities can reduce recidivism and promote long-term success. The goal should be to support our youth in becoming responsible and productive members of society." #JusticeReform #YouthEmpowerment #RehabilitationOverDetention #WorkforceDevelopment #PathwaysToSuccess

Using the Science of Hope to Promote A Hope Centered Organizational Culture Where Well-Being Is The Outcome
Nurturing Hope During Adversity: Hope As A Framework For Action Hope is a protective factor helping us cope with daily life stress and is a psychological strength that can be taught. Likewise, hope can also be robbed. Our research shows that exposure to adversity impacts the nature of our goals, feelings of urgency and despair constrain our pathways thinking, and willpower is degraded through fear and uncertainty. The good news is that hope can be taught and more importantly nurtured through intentional program services. Our publication in the Journal of Community Psychology shows simple strategies human and social service providers use to nurture hope and goal achievement among adults experiencing the adversity of homelessness. I am forever proud of our partnerships with human service agencies and community partners to advance the Science of Hope. Angela Pharris, Ph.D., and I use this research-based evidence as a framework to advance the hope centered organization. Agency hope navigators develop strategic plans to implement hope centered programs to improve client outcomes and promote employee wellbeing. #hopescience #wellbeing #humanservice

Where can you learn how to support your own mental health and gain access to treatment for others? For the past 6 years Loudoun County Public Schools in Northern Virginia (DC's Western suburb) has becoming a model of public mental health advocacy. 🌟 Exciting Development: Meeting with Bernie Sanders' Office 🌟 I am thrilled to share insights from my first meeting as the Federal Advocacy Coordinator for Vermont, representing the American Psychological Association (APA), with Bernie Sanders' office. This engagement marks a pivotal moment in our efforts to elevate mental health advocacy at the state and national levels. Key Discussion Points: Enhancing SAMHSA’s Mobile Mental Health Crisis Response Grants: We advocated for increased funding to bolster in-person support for individuals in crisis, especially critical in Vermont's rural communities. This initiative is vital for complementing the efforts of 988 crisis call counselors. Strengthening School and Campus-Based Mental Health Programs: The importance of robust mental health services in educational settings was a primary focus, considering the heightened mental health challenges students face in the post-pandemic era. Innovative Approaches in Mental Health: A mutual interest in exploring and developing future technology for mental health care was a highlight. These advancements could position Vermont as a frontrunner in mental health innovation. This meeting signifies a major step in ensuring that mental health needs are not just recognized but prioritized and effectively addressed. Stay tuned for more updates and how you can be involved in these transformative initiatives. #MentalHealthMatters #VermontStrong #AdvocacyInAction #SandersOfficeMeeting #APAAdvocacy #BernieFanArt #ProfessionalGrowth #PublicHealth #InnovativeSolutions #MentalHealthAwareness

I say it's time to move from place of burnt out exhaustion - to a place where you are thriving and your child is achieving their full potential. How? As a single Mum of three children, two of whom are autistic, I am well aware of some of the struggles and strains that can face family life. I know how it feels to be overwhelmed, to be running from one meeting to the next without even time to breathe. As a psychologist with 20 years of experience as a Clinical Psychologist within the NHS and private sector, working with both adults and children, my work is rooted in psychological evidence. Both of these feed into my passionate belief that all individuals with intellectual disabilities and neurodiversity should be empowered to reach their true potential and live lives full of love, support, fun, and achievement. And that with the right care and support, they absolutely can. So if you are a parent with a child with learning disabilities or other additional needs, and you feeling overwhelmed and exhausted... know that your feelings are valid and know that I would love to offer support. Together, we can create a plan that works for you and your family. 💛 Book your free Clarity discovery call with me today and gain clarity on the best steps to take and have the support you need to move forward with confidence. 💪 You deserve to thrive as you help your child thrive ⭐️ 👉 Link in bio (or in slide above) or send me a message so we can talk. Morgan Stanley has announced the winners of its Alliance for Children’s Mental Health Innovation Awards, an initiative that aims to fund and advance transformative mental healthcare solutions for children and young adults across the U.S. From nearly 750 applications, five organizations have been chosen for their inventive and scalable solutions for improving children’s mental health. Each organization will be awarded $100,000 to expand their programming. As one of five organizations nationwide selected to receive the Morgan Stanley Alliance for Children’s Mental Health Innovation Award, CCAMH is being recognized for its commitment to expanding services for first-generation American teens and families. With this award, CCAMH will increase current services to include a First-Gen Teen Center that will empower first-generation American teen advisors to engage in peer mentoring and train new therapists to provide culturally informed treatment and family support. “The American Psychological Association applauds the efforts of the Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health for innovation in expanding access to mental health care support for the most vulnerable among us,” said APA CEO Arthur C. Evans Jr. “We are gratified that this program was inspired by our collective work to promote population health, which seeks to prevent mental illness by working with people before they have a full-fledged diagnosis.” #YouthMentalHealth #MentalWellnessForTeens #MindfulGeneration #MentalHealthMatters #YouthEmpowerment #BreakTheStigma #TeenMentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #YouthResilience #EndTheSilence #StrongerTogether #MentalHealthSupport #EmpoweringYouth #SelfCareForTeens #YouthAdvocacy #MentalHealthWarrior #YouthWellbeing #SpeakUpForTeens #MentalHealthRevolution #healthymindsforyouth
