For those who already have a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan, the MA Open Enrollment Period is their chance to choose a different MA plan or go back to Original Medicare. They can only switch once during this period and their new plan will go into effect the first of the month following the enrollment request. Want to learn more? Medicare only pays for acute care like hospital stays, limited skilled nursing, and emergency surgery.
You are on your own for long term care; assistance from a caregiver with activities of daily living (ADLs) like bathing, dressing, eating and toileting (not driving, bill paying, grocery shopping, house cleaning, etc).
When you’re recovering from a serious illness, you will need some kind of help. What if recovery takes several months? Years? What if you don’t fully recover, but you’re very much alive?
Thanks for sharing this article SAM!
Medicare does not pay for assistance with ADLs, and hospice care (end of life comfort care) which Medicare does pay for, also does not provide ADL services.
What’s your plan, and how will you pay for care when you can no longer manage living independently? Do you have long term care insurance?
Who have you selected to serve you, during your life, when you can no longer manage on your own?
Not only do you need to consider your care, you need an estate plan today, so you can grant authority to someone you know and trust, for when the time comes.
If you don’t have a written plan, the crisis of suddenly needing care will be messy, and take longer than necessary because someone will need to make decisions on your behalf, and you haven’t selected someone.
Then the court might need to be involved, your family will struggle along, with whatever they think they know at the time, and it may cost you (and them) much more because you didn’t plan ahead.
This is not about how much money you have, this is about staying in control, and establishing the rules for your end game.
Even if you’ll need Medicaid, or other financial assistance, having an estate plan means you have empowered someone to fill out and sign the forms; for you. You’ve set down your preferences, so your loved ones don’t have to argue, or guess, about what you need.
If you have plenty of money and assets, thinking you’re “self insured”, you still need to get your plan done, so someone you trust can follow your instructions with the power you gave them to do so.

Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollment continues to surge, with over half (51%) of Medicare-eligible beneficiaries now opting for this government-sponsored program. This development marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time that MA enrollment surpasses traditional fee-for-service enrollment among Medicare-eligible individuals.
