Material of the Month. Molybdenum(IV) telluride, molybdenum ditelluride or just molybdenum telluride is a compound of molybdenum and tellurium with formula MoTe2, corresponding to a mass percentage of 27.32% molybdenum and 72.68% tellurium. It can crystallise in two dimensional sheets which can be thinned down to monolayers that are flexible and almost transparent. It is a semiconductor, and can fluoresce. It is part of a class of materials called transition metal dichalcogenides. As a semiconductor the band gap lies in the infrared region. Hanwha developing thermal ALD equipment for deposition of molybdenum Hanwha Precision Machinery is developing wafer fabrication with their new thermal ALD equipment capable of depositing molybdenum. Compared to tungsten, molybdenum offers lower resistivity and leaves no fluoride residue, making it ideal for future semiconductor metal gates. Gaianixx has successfully achieved the formation of a single-crystal copper thin film on a 4-inch Si substrate. Generally, a single-crystal copper thin film have been formed on a sapphire substrate, but Gaianixx's Multi-functional® Interlayer enables the formation of a single-crystal copper thin film on a Si substrate. The use of Si substrates is expected to contribute to cost reduction and be applicable to large diameter wafer process, which is common in semiconductor industry. By single-crystallizing metals, the absence of grain boundaries enhances electrical, optical, thermal, mechanical and chemical properties, as well as uniformity. The single-crystal copper thin film successfully demonstrated by Gaianixx in this project, when used as wiring materials for semiconductors and ICs, is expected to reduce power consumption, miniaturize devices, and improve performance by leveraging the high electrical and thermal conductivity. Furthermore, by combining with graphene, new types of chemical reactions that were not achievable with conventional materials become possible, potentially bringing about new developments in the field of catalytic chemistry. 🙌 Milestone 3 is achieved: a Stable Li thin metal film anode 🔬 The achievement of Milestone 3 has been worth demonstrating the success on manufacturing the Li thin metal anode by Pulsed Laser Deposition (#PLD) technique where 20 µm thick Li was deposited on top of Cu foil. Stripping-plating measurements of symmetric cells placing a sulfide #solid electrolyte as a separator in coin cell configuration, without applying any external pressure, did not display worse electrochemical performance than a commercial 20 µm thick Li-on-Cu electrode at a current density of 0.15 mA·cm−2 for capacity of 0.3 mAh·cm−2. In addition, the Li-on-Cu electrode manufactured by PLD has also shown its potential on using as an anode in full cells based on Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) active material in coin cell configuration displaying not an inconsiderable discharge specific capacity with a high retention capacity for the initial cycles. 👨🔬 👩🔬 Thereby, after the accomplishment of the Li-on-Cu manufacturing by PLD and its validation, now it is time to move forwards of exploring the inorganic protective layers to protect the Li metal anode by PLD in PULSELiON project. 👏 The completion of MS3 has been the result of dedicated teamwork, commitment, and the collective expertise of all those partners involved in work package 3.
