The Executive Leadership Council (ELC)’s Post

The Executive Leadership Council (ELC) celebrates Pride Day stands with our LGBTQ+ community. From civil rights activist James Baldwin to the first Black lesbian to serve in any state legislature in the country, Simone Bell, our Black LGBTQ+ trailblazers have long made history with innumerable contributions to politics, art, medicine, and many other fields. “As long as there have been Black people, there have been Black LGBTQ and same-gender-loving people,” says Dr. David Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition. Bayard Rustin: Civil rights activist and key advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Rustin organized the 1963 March on Washington and was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Simone Bell: A community organizer who served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2009 to 2015 James Baldwin: One of the greatest American writers and thinkers, Baldwin openly addressed racism and homophobia and made significant contributions to the civil rights movement. Audre Lorde: A self-described “Black, lesbian, feminist, mother, poet, warrior,” Lorde made lasting contributions to feminist theory, critical race studies, and queer theory. Today, we recognize and celebrate our community's diversity, resilience, and excellence. #PrideDay #PrideMonth #Diversity #Equality
