Transplanting PhDs into fulfilling non-academic careers 🌻 | Dev Psych PhD → Founder @ After Academia | Career Strategist and Mentor to 200+ Transitioning Academics 💛
"Do you actually like your full-time job?" The short answer: yes. The long answer: This week, I'm in Florida for work - I'm a Human Factors Engineer at a medical device company. I ensure that the devices we build for orthopedic surgery are safe and effective for use. This is my third industry job after academia, after I quit my post-doctoral fellowship. My first two jobs weren't a great for for me. But now, I couldn't ask for more in a career: Remote work. Great compensation. Mission-driven company. Stable employment. Smart (and fun) colleagues. Autonomy. Impact. Tons to learn. Room to grow. Guess the third time's the charm :) It is all sunshine and rainbows? Of course not. I experience the same struggles as everyone else working in UX right now, trying to interface with cross-functional product teams. And, sometimes the work is boring (hello regulatory submissions). Sometimes it's slow. Sometimes it's frustrating. But is it more boring, slow, or frustrating than academic research on human infants?? Absolutely not. You try studying 14-month-olds... No job is perfect, inside of outside of academia. But outside of academia, I guarantee that you will find a job that values you. That supports you. That fairly compensates you. It may not be your first non-ac job. Or your second one. Maybe the third time's the charm. 💛 P.S. - No job is perfect. What do you like most/least about your current job? (this is a great question to ask in an interview!) ♻️ repost to help a friend :)

The only person who can stop you from getting into the job of your dreams is you. Ignore haters who tell you to quit. Ignore those in the job you want who tell you that you need more experience. How did they get hired for the first time then? Bet on yourself. Adapt. Work. Stay the course. #jobsearch #jobtips #careerdevelopment #careercoach #phd #phdlife #postdoc #phdstudent #cheekyscientist

This article is about healthcare in general and one of the main points of this article is managing workload. Being organized is an important skill needed in the medical field as it allows you to prioritize what's most important while being able to finish all your tasks. It is also important to note that it is okay to ask for help if needed. Some colleagues may be more experienced than you and can have the answers you're seeking, asking them for their opinion is respectful and can be viewed as maturity rather than weakness. Another important point made in this article is patient communication. It is important to note that you can't always take their emotional pain away especially when it comes to grieving or having received bad news. It is okay to allow them to express emotion in such situations, it is even in their best interest. Apart from verbally communicating with patients, it is also important to be a good listener. Phrasing things in a certain way which reflects what information they have shared with you reassures patients that their concerns are being heard and respected. During my internship at Covington I plan to use both of these skills. Being organized will allow me to finish all my main tasks while being able to assist in other tasks where extra hands may be needed. I will also ask question in regards to tasks I may not know how to do so that I can be more efficient in them. Communication is an important skill not just in Healthcare but in general as well. I will communicate clearly with the residents so that I can then relay the information to co-workers and have any issues resolved as fast as possible. #alpinecteinternships #mountainlandcte Alpine School District CTE Internships
