Excerpt from last week's FoodTech Weekly conversation (https://lnkd.in/ddGrMNjJ) with Marc Coloma of Heura Foods. It took some time to get Marc on the line because he was busy successfully raising a €40M Series B round — the largest plant-based round in 2023. Valid excuse, I guess. Marc has always been a social entrepreneur, engaging himself in student movements, as well as with environmental rights and animal rights organizations. He joined an international animal rights org in Catalonia, and had an epiphany: ‘I was obsessed with how we could drive impact in our campaigns, so I started studying marketing and sociology, and realized that there needs to be structures in place for change to be able to happen. If you have bikes without bike lanes, people will not bike.’ Marc’s learnings led him to start Heura in 2017 together with Bernat Ananos Martinez. ‘We are pursuing a protein transition to achieve sustainability at scale, which has happened in other industries. We want to make the problem obsolete, by creating successors, not alternatives. Current supply chains rely on animals to get proteins, but they’re an obsolete technology to fulfill our needs,’ Marc explains. Heura uses scalable, nutritious plant-based materials including microorganisms to create foods that society loves, and in the process plans to become one of the largest actors in Europe. This includes educating consumers on how their consumption habits have impacts, and how changed habits can bring a better future. ‘We understand the functionality of meat - juiciness, meltability, stretchability and so on, and we have a patented  microstructure approach. This allows us to develop superior products that have the best nutritional value on the market, while being clean label and additive free’, Marc claims. Heura today has 110 employees, of which 25 in R&D. Most are based in Spain. The company produces and sells a wide range of alternative protein products such as plant-based chicken, burgers, breaded products, and cold cuts at 22K points of sale in 20 countries in retail and foodservice. Last year the company did €38M+ in revenue, and Heura aims to reach profitability by 2025. (Spain/Portugal became profitable for Heura in late 2023). So far, Heura has raised €60M, of which around €10M from crowdfunding (‘we’ve built a community of 450,000 people, and are a community-led brand’, Marc says proudly). Marc is eager for consumers to try the category and in particular Heura’s products, ‘to be part of the food revolution that we need’. Heura is also starting a B2B licensing division to help other companies create a new generation of products. Luis Felipe Oliva is an international consultant with extensive experience in the financial sector, where he led various positions in public and private institutions, such as being the Former Investment and Financing Manager at CORFO. “In the introductory workshop, the development of the venture capital fund industry, the general characteristics of these investment vehicles, as well as the basic conditions to structure a wine investment fund for the wine industry of the Valparaíso Region will be addressed. ", emphasizes Luis Felipe Oliva. BioTech Development Max Morales, Senior Project Manager of #WIT2024, Agricultural Engineer and researcher of Old Vineyards and Chilean Vinestocks since 2001 will be giving a speech to explain the importance of Chile in the world specifically in the presence of #ancestralvineyards brought by French, Spanish, Italian to Chile since 1551 until before the attack of phylloxera in the world in more than 4.000 kilometers from north to south (DNA genetic material). The speech will explain strengths and opportunities of Chile by leading several actions like rescuing old vines, create new products and particularly, the importance of the creation of a genetic reservoir in Chile. 🏢Exciting infrastructure news! UK startup Extracellular, seeking to help cultivated meat startups bridge the 'valley of death', yesterday announced the opening of the largest contract pilot plant in Europe for cultivated meat. This remains a key issue for cultivated meat startups working to scale from research to commercial volume. After the initial research phase, companies don't know how well their process can scale (and if it is commercially viable) without access to expensive pilot facilities. The catch is, they often have to build such facilities themselves to find out. Understandably, such a big risk can be a hard sell for investors. To reduce the risk and associated costs, this newly emerging model offers companies access to facilities and expert input from staff with experience in scaling. Other examples of this approach, such as Belgium's Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, have shown great success. The new pilot facility offers food-grade production and is already operational at 200L scale. By December this year, 2,000L of capacity are expected to be online and available for contracting to cultivated meat and seafood companies. Expanding access to infrastructure will be key for the maturation of the sector, as highlighted in The Good Food Institute's recent State of Global Policy report. Australian startup Vow is the fourth firm in the world to be approved for the sale of a developed meat product after obtaining the #Singaporean government's approval for the sale of its Japanese quail-derived cultured meat products. Vow is a cultured meat company founded and operated in Sydney. When Vow's parfait product, marketed under the Forge brand, debuts at Singapore's Mandala Club this month, it will be the only #commercially accessible cultured meat product. A meat sample is taken from an animal and grown in a culture until its cellular makeup is identical to that of regular meat. This process is known as cultivating meat. The marketing strategy for Vow will center on presenting Quailia, a fictional new species. “Vow has differentiated itself from other start-ups in the cultivated meat sector by deliberately not trying to replicate meat products and formats already available to consumers,” Food Frontier CEO Simon Eassom said. “It has firmly set its sights on meat eaters looking for new and unique culinary experiences, not just as a business strategy but also as a way of bringing attention to the capacity of cultivated meat technology to completely transform how we think about food. After China, Food Frontier ranks Singapore as the second-most #advantageous market in Asia for alternative proteins.
