Today I saved a life. It might have been a little animal or bird’s life, but I took the time to do it anyway. A beautiful Red-Tailed Hawk perched on my roof looking down on which animal or bird was going to be its breakfast. It sat there majestically scanning the property as robins swooped down on it warning the neighborhood of its presence. I could have let it stand there and dominate the situation, but I’ve seen it take away too many little ones from their nests and burrows in recent months. Not today. I stood beneath it, I waved my arms and said ‘go away.’ It stared at me, contemplated for a moment and decided to simply leave…..with the robins in hot pursuit. ———————————————— How does this translate to federal contracting? This is a post for the COs in FYQ4. It’s time to Shoo Away the Large Primes and give some of the Small businesses a shot to thrive at your agencies. You’ve been letting the Incumbents pick off the smalls and newbies one-by-one killing their chances to grow. Create a safe space ecosystem of Small, WOSB, VOSB, SDVOSB, 8a, HubZone, and disadvantaged businesses at your agency. Lead in FY2024! Be strong and set aside more ops for smalls this year. I just had a client get introduced by the OSDBU to the Prime and when they made the introduction, the Prime said, "Sure I'm happy to meet with the small" and was all warm and fuzzy. The OSDBU called him a "Rock Star" in email for responding to the email and promising to make it happen. My client reached out to the prime -- and -- NOTHING. BTW, this prime is doing over $1B SOLE SOURCE work with this agency. Typical. This happens every single day. The OSDBUs buddy up with the primes, passing smalls back and forth, calling each other Rock Stars - and NOTHING changes. The prime keeps its contract and they all put the intro into their "Good Faith Effort" files... leaving the small business empty handed once again. Come on, OSDBUs - you can do better. Start giving contracts DIRECTLY to smalls.

This morning the hawk left a feather behind …. A reminder that even if the primes get sent away….. they’ll be back.

Oh, I LIKE this, Eileen! "A safe space ecosystem of Small, WOSB, VOSB, SDVOSB, 8a, HubZone, and disadvantaged businesses at your agency." And please include Very Small businesses such as mine; yep, there's a "Very Small Business Set-Aside" under the "Type of Set Aside" filter on the usaspending.gov/search page!
