Imagine this scenario: You were unexpectedly laid off from a job you enjoyed. You spent a few days grieving the loss of your work, being both angry and incredibly sad and everything in between. You then started applying everywhere, working your network, trying to find your next role. Friends - it can be draining to have lots of first interviews, but not necessarily second interviews. It can be defeating not to hear from companies to whom you applied. It can be demoralizing to read that you weren't selected from a "very strong pool of candidates," or that the job you'd applied to is no longer available. During these times, it's okay to be angry. It's okay to feel defeated. It's even okay to feel demoralized. I sincerely believe that once you accept you're feeling those feelings, you'll work through and find yourself once again able to continue the networking, the applying, and the general experience that is looking for a new job. So, to all my friends who are feeling stuck - it's natural to feel that way. Let yourself feel your feelings. It's the only healthy way to get through them. I'm looking for a new challenge! Well, not me personally... I should've used quotation marks there, my bad.. But this is something the vast majority of people respond with when I ask for their main reason for seeking a new opportunity. We all like to be challenged, but what does that look like to 𝘺𝘰𝘶 ? - Do you want to work with a different technology stack? - Do you want to get more involved in people/ technical leadership? - Are you not pushing as many new features as you'd have hoped? The list could goes on… but, the answer requires depth. During an interview, the more detail you can give, the higher your chance of knowing if the role is a step forward for you. Or not, as it may be, which will then save time completing a process for a company that's not a fit. Switching roles can be stressful, little things like this can definitely help to streamline the process 🙂. Good luck to everyone currently on their search for a new role. Not getting the job you want doesn't mean you're not good enough I know it can be tough to not get the job you want, especially after putting in so much time and effort. But it's important to remember that not getting the job doesn't mean you're not good enough. Here are a few things to keep in mind: You can be the best candidate and still not get selected. There are many factors that go into hiring decisions, and sometimes it's just not meant to be. If you didn't get the job, it was never meant for you. This may be hard to hear, but it's important to believe that there will be something better in store for you. You weren't rejected, you were redirected. This means that the door that closed is opening you up to something even better. Your value does not decrease based upon someone's inability to see your worth. You are valuable and talented, and you will find the right job for you. So keep your head up, believe in yourself, and keep trying. Do the thing. Three months, three unique clients, three similar outcomes. "It's time." They said. After 10+ years with their current organizations, they were ready to explore other options. Great performers, interviewed multiple times internally for promotions company, stuck in a holding pattern. We got to work: identified what kinds of roles they wanted next, rebuilt their outdated resumes, updated their LinkedIn profiles, and practiced how to tell their stories. While exploring external options they kept irons in the fire at their current companies - doing great work and applying for roles as they came open. Guess what? All three got promoted internally. Always send a thank-you email after an interview or meeting! Whether it's an interview or a discussion about your career goals, someone took valuable time out of their day to meet with you. Show your appreciation with a thank-you email. Thank-you emails aren't just polite—they're powerful. They help you continue the conversation and further express your interest in the job or relationship. I've experienced times where I didn't get a role, but because I built strong relationships during the hiring process, I was referred to other opportunities within the same company or elsewhere. Remember, a simple thank-you can open doors to unexpected opportunities!
