Why Barbie is making us feel all sorts of ways. No two women have the same experience of being a woman. But every woman you know relates to something in that movie. Because it's told from the perspective of a woman, and not much is. (Sure, the ultrapink sort of woman, but a woman. There are lots of flavors of us, also well illustrated in the movie. I rather like Weird Barbie, mahself. 😜) Rather, it's told from the perspective of a fantasy world where women have power, authority, agency, and …. Privilege. This isn't a movie about the patriarchy, Ken. (Cue Carly Simon lyrics.) This is a movie imagining women don't even know the patriarchy exists. The very definition of Privilege. It's the world I've been artfully fabricating while furiously trying to create for my young daughters since they were born, but they're growing old enough to experience the very same moment Barbie launches herself from Barbie Land into the Real World to discover it is not, in fact, a woman's world. Quite the opposite. We saw Barbie's horror in vivid color. I see my daughters' reactions every single day. What do you mean… pay gap? What do you mean women don't make decisions about women? Where are the women CEOs? Writers? Doctors? Politicians? What's… harassment? If you mean what you say about #inclusion, #belonging, and #equity, you seek to design a world in which everyone feels seen, naturally included, equal and at ease, with no barriers between Every One and Every Achievement. Lol Personally, I would not deem any form of work as lazy since every job is a necessary one in some way, but I too see how the optics of social media and influence brought these buzz words together in an attempt to evoke a trending topic. I saw the Barbie film this weekend and it really made me think about Women and Skills. We need to talk more about breaking down stereotypes and celebrating the power of women's skills! The film has beautifully showcased the strength, determination, and unique talents that women possess. Just like Barbie, women continue to prove that they can excel in any field they set their minds to. From becoming world-renowned artists to innovative scientists, successful entrepreneurs to compassionate healthcare professionals – women are rewriting the narrative and making waves across industries. This film is a reminder that there's no limit to what women can achieve when they believe in themselves. The Barbie film reminds us that it's crucial to inspire the next generation of young minds, regardless of gender, to pursue their passions fearlessly. By showcasing Barbie's journey of exploring various careers and skills, we encourage young girls and boys to dream big and reach for the stars. As a #feminist, as a mother who had bought Barbies for her daughter and a movie buff, I was curious to know what #barbiethemovie would offer. My daughter and I wore pink shirts and went to the theatre, looking forward to popcorn and a post movie discussion. #Barbie is about many things. To me, it is an attempt to answer a fundamental question-What does it mean to be a #woman in the world today? At one level, it seems that 'we have come a long way, baby.' Women have conquered space, become doctors, lawyers and leaders. It seems that we have powerful role models and every girl believes the dream of “I can be anything I want to be!” But this is a pretty illusion- just like Barbieland where every night is Girls night and men are mere appendages like Barbie’s boyfriend Ken. In the film, Barbie has to leave her pink imaginary home and venture into the Real World to get some answers to her problems. In the Real World, #patriarchy still rules. “We have become better at hiding it,” says a male executive in Mattel. A company promotes #diversity and has gender neutral bathrooms but there is not a single woman in the C-Suite. Women are ogled at on the streets and ignored in the offices. Women are allowed to try for everything but feel that nothing they do is ever good enough. Even in developed economies in the Western world, without female infanticide, dowry deaths, eve-teasing and honor killing- women don’t seem to have it all. As Gloria, the office employee in the film says - “You’re supposed to love being a mother, but don’t talk about your kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman, but also always be looking out for other people. You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line.”  The Real world is messy and contradictory. Even as we embrace new words like gender fluidity and non- binary, we cannot escape the old gender roles that have been thrust on us for centuries. Barbie captures the confusing #zeitgeist of these woke times. There is no simple solution for the #gender wars. The feminine pinkutopia is unrealistic. The patriarchal Real World is unsustainable. It seems that the only way forward is to go through this-together. Stereotypical Barbie and Stereotypical Ken need to figure out who they really are. As Ken gives up the typical trappings of patriarchy, Barbie needs to own her strength and smartness. Barbies needs to stop the fake adoration of the muscled guitar strumming Kens and Kens need to stop the fake posturing to impress the Barbies. Going beyond gender requires all of us to embrace uncomfortable contradictions and discard comfortable biases. Yes, men can cry, dislike horses and bikes and still be men. Women can wear pink, be pretty AND be powerful. The Real world requires us to get real and be just human in all our extraordinary ordinariness. Then it can become a #betterworld ! #genderbias #genderequality

It's vital that we stand by and uplift one another in our individual and collective journeys of growth and transformation. Many women of color don’t think they have a story worthy of sharing and I was the same. You may think that because your life isn’t grand and full of adventure that there isn’t much to talk about… Let alone post about on LinkedIn. But I want to challenge that, because I was that woman before. I didn’t think I had experiences worthy of sharing. I didn’t think I had a message worthy of making an impact. I didn’t think my voice would reach people outside of my life’s bubble. And thinking that way kept me small. It kept me scared. It kept me doubting my skills. And in a world that needs to hear from more voices that look like me. Voices who are different. I knew I needed to find a way to disarm my fears. So I dug deep to unearth my: ✨ conviction codes ✨ my core values ✨ my purpose Thankfully that gave me a confidence I didn’t think was possible for me and a fragrant message that’d always trail behind me. But what I didn’t expect was that each of those would uncover all the stories that would help spread my message. And girl, all those stories are also within you because… You always have a story worthy of being told. You hold stories that can lift the mountains of doubt that holds many women of colour hostage. You hold stories that can embolden and empower women of color to go after their dreams. You hold stories that can inspire them to finally bet on themselves. . . .
