𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 Ł1 ɨnŧɇɍfɇɍɇnȼɇ? /lɪŋˈɡwɪs·tɪks/ nerd and fully human language teacher and French⇄English language solutions provider
After 16 years of co-raising a Canadian-born daughter in French with little support from her schools, few resources in the community, fewer French-speaking peers, and constant questioning from family, friends, and peers (Why don’t you just speak English with her...?), the investment has paid off in a very tangible way: she not only completed AP French and earned college credit in her second year of high school but is also taking four more college classes in her third year of high school.💪🏽 It wasn't always easy: more than $1k spent over the years on a home library, daily struggles to make time each day for academic programs such as Rue des écoles and the CNED (Centre national d'éducation à distance online)... She also still complains that her English suffered because she didn't know the right word in school.😔 Here’s to all the parents that use a different language at home than the one their children’s schools use! Bilingualism benefits children in SO MANY WAYS other than communication within the family, including broader intercultural awareness and staying better informed with more sources and perspectives on global issues.🌍 All this is a shout-out to any future multicultural parents!📢 Do EVERYTHING YOU CAN to give YOUR precious children every chance to be constantly immersed and fascinated in the amazing world of bilingualism. BY THE WAY: want to know one of the greatest places in the U.S. to accomplish this? #Gwinnett. Along with Texas and California, Gwinnett County, Georgia, on the north side of #Atlanta was highlighted in a recent article about efforts local communities are making to support dual immersion in schools. And why not? As one of the most diverse areas in the country—linguistically, racially, and by every other measure—it’s the perfect laboratory! 💯 Please support dual immersion! Over the years, U.S. education has experienced a push and pull regarding the language of instruction for Multilingual Learners. The idea that one language must be learned fully before a second language can be introduced has led many schools to teach native Spanish speakers exclusively in Spanish during early primary education or adhere entirely to English instruction without fully leveraging appropriate instructional practices for language acquisition. However, learning a language is not an either-or endeavor: the human brain can learn to read, write, and speak in two or more languages simultaneously. In fact, Multilingual Learners show increased metacognitive and metalinguistic skills and strengthened executive function, including attention switching, cognitive flexibility, and working memory. Even when English is the language of instruction and content-area mastery or skilled reading is the educational target, Multilingual Learners can cultivate their heritage language assets. When effective instructional practices make the most of cross-linguistic transfer and integrated language instruction with ample spoken language practice, Structured Literacy approaches can support Multilingual Learners in becoming proficiently multilingual and multiliterate. Read the white paper to learn more about cultivating Multilingual Learners' heritage language as an asset in the classroom! https://hubs.la/Q02y-mMq0 #StructuredLiteracy #Language #MultilingualLearners #EmergentBilinguals #Bilingualism #DualLanguage #EnglishLearner #HeritageLanguage #DiverseLanguageBackgrounds #Education #Educators #EdTech #ELearning #EdReform #ScienceofReading #SecondLanguageAcquisition #ProfessionalDevelopment #Dyslexia #AcademicResearch #AILearning #DiverseClassrooms
