📚 Our latest Team Science research was just published in the Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nursing! ➡ In response to a nationwide fentanyl shortage, our institution assessed whether changing our first-line postoperative intravenous opioid from fentanyl to hydromorphone impacted patient outcomes ➡The multidisciplinary team concluded that the increase in postoperative length of stay associated with hydromorphone was not clinically significant and the decreased waste of prefilled syringes outweighed the small potential increased risk of resurgery compared to the shorter-acting fentanyl ➡ In the event of future medication shortages, we propose this quality initiative framework be applied. Celebrating National Time Out Day: Ensuring Patient Safety Today, we proudly observe National Time Out Day, a vital reminder of the importance of taking a "time out" before surgical procedures to ensure patient safety. Established by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), this day emphasizes the need for surgical teams to pause and verify critical information before making the first incision. What's the importance of taking a time-out? Preventing Errors: Time outs help prevent wrong-site, wrong-procedure, and wrong-person surgeries by confirming patient identity, surgical site, and procedure details. Enhancing Team Communication: This practice fosters clear communication and teamwork among the surgical team, ensuring everyone is on the same page. Improving Patient Outcomes: By double-checking all details, we reduce the risk of complications and enhance overall patient care. What's the Time Out Process? 1. Verify Patient Information 2. Review Critical Details 3. Communicate as a Team 4. Document the Time Out At Baylor Scott & White Medical Center—Frisco, we are dedicated to maintaining the highest patient safety standards. Our surgical teams rigorously adhere to the time-out protocol, ensuring that every patient receives the safest and most precise care possible. Let's use National Time Out Day to remind each team member of the critical role they play in patient safety. By consistently practicing this simple yet powerful step, we can significantly impact surgical outcomes. Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/gM3CHFgU Lisa L.
