🌎🌏🌍National Conference of Climate Change Brazilian 🇧🇷Research Network About Global Climate Change Date: June 18 to 20, 2024 From June 18 to 20, the 1ª National Climate Change Conference will bring together experts to discuss the impacts of global warming in Brazil, energy transition, biodiversity, climate effects on health, water resources and also the ability of cities to predict and resilience in the face of extreme events. The event is supported by the National Institute of Space Research (INPE). Promoted by the Brazilian Network of Research on Global Climate Change (Climate Network), the Conference will be held in hybrid format (face-to-face and online) at the CNPq Auditorium in Brasilia (DF). In addition to round tables on the research areas of the Network, there will be debates on Women and Climate Change; S&T Induction Policies for Climate Change; and 5ª National Communication to the Climate Convention. It is the first national conference organised by the Climate Network, established in 2007 by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) to meet the national needs of scientific knowledge on "global climate change" and to support Brazilian diplomacy in international negotiations on the subject. The Climate Network brings together more than one hundred researchers from all regions of the country, organised into 16 subnets that contemplate the transversality of the theme, and representatives of ministries and government agencies involved in the climate agenda. One of the objectives of the event is to evaluate the advances made by the Climate Network since its creation and what will be its next challenges. The conference will also address the contribution of Brazilian science to COP30, which will be held in 2025 in Belém (PA). For INPE, society and decision makers need to be aware of the importance of scientific knowledge about the climate agenda, showing that science and technology are fundamental to the construction of a more sustainable future. https://lnkd.in/dZYbeyaw

Delegates from 198 countries in Bonn for the UN Climate Change #JuneClimateMeetings have concluded draft texts for COP29. Some progress was made in several areas: 1. they have streamlined the content for the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance, aiming to finalize a substantive draft before COP29; 2. they advanced adaptation indicators to be forward-looking, effective, and scientifically sound; 3. Steps were taken towards improving the international carbon market (yes, I know) and 4. Parties collaborated for greater transparency and supported each other in planning stronger climate action plans. ***The need for decisive coordinated action among governments, private sector, and civil society to invulnerable climate challenges, remains an urgent task.*** I'm sharing our article, co-authored with esteemed climate experts Dr. Thelma Krug, Chair of the World Meteorological Organization Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), and Dr. Carlos A. Nobre from the Instituto de Estudos Avançados da USP, with valuable insights into the climate crisis highlighting multidisciplinary strategies to mitigate its impacts. The article from O Globo on June 14 delivers an important message from the G20 in Brazil. The Oceans 20 (O20) is an engagement group within the G20 focused on ocean sustainability and marine conservation. Its goal is to promote the Blue Economy, which aims at the sustainable use of oceanic resources for economic growth, livelihood improvement, and job creation while maintaining the health of marine ecosystems. Projections from the OECD indicate that by 2030, the oceans could become the 7th largest global economy, generating $3 trillion. The priorities of the O20 include addressing the climate crisis, promoting social equity, conserving the oceans, developing science and technology, and strengthening global governance. The Blue Economy promotes the sustainable and responsible use of marine resources, biodiversity conservation, research and technological development, as well as integrating coastal and indigenous communities into economic activities. In Brazil, the concept is particularly relevant for the Blue Amazon, focusing on the responsible exploitation of resources such as oil and promoting technological innovation for marine conservation. Civil society will present demands to the G20 in July, focusing on the ratification of the High Seas Treaty before the UN Conference in 2025. The ocean conservation goals of the O20 include protecting marine biodiversity, ensuring resource sustainability, combating pollution, promoting research and innovation, and reinforcing governance and international collaboration. The Oceans 20 will play a crucial role in promoting ocean sustainability and marine conservation, aiming for a balance between economic development and the preservation of marine ecosystems.
