Given the tragic events that unfolded last week with the collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore, it is clear that local, regional and national businesses will feel the impact. The MD Chamber of Commerce believes "the collapse has effectively severed Maryland's main East-West connection, crippling the Port of Baltimore and disrupting businesses and jobs throughout the Baltimore-Washington corridor." Accordingly, now is the time to make go-forward adjustments to business models to address the potential financial distress for the near and long term. Read an interesting article in the BBJ a couple days ago about the Port of Mobile and honestly blown away by the impact it has in Alabama. The article (link in comments) discusses the Port of Mobile's economic impact on Alabama. The Port's economic impact GREW by $13 billion YoY (+/- 15%) in 2022 to $98.3 billion, and supports 351,359 jobs across the state. Additionally, the Port has more than $1 billion dollars in capital projects underway, which will support even more growth and create an inland intermodal facility in North Alabama. For reference, the Port of Mobile was responsible for over 35% of AL's GDP in 2022. This is pretty incredible, and my only suggestion moving forward for the Port is to do a better job advertising these accomplishments. We hear about the Port often, but rarely do we hear actual figures on the size and importance of it. I'm excited to see what the numbers end up being for 2023. This bridge, which carries 3% of the nation’s GDP annually, was built in 1963 and designed to carry 80,000 vehicles a day. Today it carries 160,000 vehicles a day and is in urgent need of expansion and repair. Thanks to the Bipartisan #Infrastructure Law, the dream of decades is becoming a reality. While we often say there are no Republican bridges or Democratic roads, it was an honor to speak with Democratic Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear and Republican Governor of Ohio Mike DeWine about the importance of this bridge for their states and the nation.
