NEW TO THE VEGAN SNEAKER STORE • Blending science and creativity, aspect climate projects create sneakers with a positive impact on the planet. Their eco-conscious designs have led brand to be “Highly Commended” by Drapers at their 2022 awards. By using new-generation textiles such as pineapple leather and fabrics derived from coconut husks, aspect offers farmers an additional stream of income, as well as minimising their impact on the planet. Marie-Laure Piednoir – Global Sustainability & Impact Director, explains their motivation. ❔𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙎𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙣'𝙨 𝙤𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣? 🗣" Our vision is to transform people into positive agents of change. The two main objectives of our "Change our Tomorrow" program are to ensure that all our key products are eco-designed or circular and to reduce our emissions by 30% by 2030. This is very ambitious, so we need to find many solutions. One of them is to find a way to recycle our products to reduce their impact. This is especially important for products such as trail and road running shoes, which have a limited lifespan. We have already explored circular design with our 100% recyclable running range, created in 2019. We have developed a dismantling system, and in Europe, the sole is then sent back to our alpine ski bootcycling factories to reintegrate the Summit Pure model, a ski touring shoe released in autumn 2022, which shows that we can produce in a closed loop with a material that retains its integrity. This is something we want to develop on a larger scale and share with the industry." ❔𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙟𝙤𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙀𝙏𝙄𝘼? 🗣" We have been members of the CETIA Innovation Committee for 3 years. We are committed to exploring a wide range of textile and footwear recycling solutions, and for us, the CETIA is the best-placed actor because it has a very dynamic ecosystem of partners. Joining the CETIA also means having the opportunity to carry out pilots but also to jointly build future circular economy sectors. The CETIA connects the right technologies with the right networks and therefore has the ability to truly make things happen, which is not necessarily the case with other consortia. Treading Lightly: The Allbirds and MIT Sloan Mission for Sustainable Footwear "Innovation is the ability to see change as an opportunity – not a threat." – Steve Jobs ➡️The Genesis of a Sustainable Partnership In an era where the call for environmental stewardship grows louder, the partnership between the MIT Sloan School of Management's Laboratory for Sustainable Business (S-Lab) and Allbirds stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in fostering sustainable innovation. This initiative is not just about creating sustainable products; it's about redefining the lifecycle of footwear to mitigate environmental impact. ➡️Understanding the Challenge Allbirds, a company that has become synonymous with sustainability in the footwear industry, made a bold pledge to halve its carbon footprint by 2025. Despite their use of natural materials, the reality that most footwear, including their own, ends in landfills prompted a quest for solutions. Enter S-Lab, with its Action Learning approach, where four MIT MBA students—Valerie Kutsch, Mengzhen Lei, Nikita Nadkarni, and Jana Parsons—took on the challenge to innovate beyond the norm. ➡️A Deep Dive into Research and Insights The team embarked on an exploratory journey, uncovering that only 5% of shoes find a second life through recycling—a statistic limited by complex materials and the absence of a recycling infrastructure. Customer surveys revealed an appetite for change: a significant interest in shoe recycling, with a preference for mail-in methods over in-store returns. This insight was pivotal, shaping the direction of their solution. ➡️Crafting a Pilot Program for Change The team's proposal—a pilot takeback program—addresses this gap, allowing customers to participate in the shoe's lifecycle by returning them via mail. This initiative not only aligns with Allbirds' sustainability goals but also paves the way for a circular economy in the footwear industry. ➡️A Call to Action for Sustainable Entrepreneurship This collaboration underscores the essence of sustainable entrepreneurship—where innovation meets responsibility.
