Hydrogen is flammable and not safety approved helium is heavy and expensive and in short supply. So what are ops options moving forward?

Turning up to my local airport as a child in the late ‘90s there would be a familiar sight on the apron. A fleet of Britten-Norman Trislander aircraft readying to fly you to runways less landed. This was the reality in Guernsey, the pride of the Channel Islands between England and France, for much of my childhood. Now the last Trislander hangs from the ceiling of a children’s play centre, viewed by youngsters below as little more than a relic of how we used to fly. Guernsey’s flag carrier was the first and largest commercial Trislander operator. At its height it had 16 aircraft, with destinations including Exeter, Southampton and Newquay in the UK and Dinard and Cherbourg in France. But by May 2017, on trend with the demise of regional aviation globally, Aurigny opted to withdraw all its Trislanders, replacing them with newer Dornier 228s. Four years later, the airline sold one of its three 228s to hydrogen propulsion start-up ZeroAvia in an effort to “simplify” the fleet. Today, Aurigny operates six aircraft: two Dornier 228s, three ATR 72s (72 passengers) and an Embraer 195 (122 passengers) to less than half of the destinations it used to offer at more expensive price points than ever before. If ever there was a case for regional air mobility, here it is. Now, our re-branding has taken place, I had time for some reflection. In 2013 I started THOMS Cleaning Innovations what changed over to THOMS Aviation in 2016. Driven by the Dry Wash Concept to make a change for airlines in expensive towing costs, longer hangar inputs and better quality. Only 3 to 4 times annual is enough to keep the aircraft shiny and bright. Until 2020, a plandemic kicked in and my precious lifework was at stake, so; Dry Washing trains was my target to keep the company alive.... and we succeeded! At that time a started to understand that we do more, much more(!!) for our Planet. We are saving millions litres of water by doing our services for aircraft or trains, but also by providing our amazing sustainable products to global partners and even competitors in our field. Together we make the difference, together we make IMPACT! Almost 11 years later I look back and can say that my mission and vision has seriously taken a flight and I am planning to stay on track for many years to come! "The future of community air service and help for #airports losing #airservice. I think this could restore regional air service which has been in steep decline for many decades. This McKinsey & Company report, not only chronicles that decline but paints an interesting picture of how #regionalairmobility and #mobilityasaservice will unfold into a multi-billion dollar industry and perhaps restore service to communities under 150-800 km. RAM brings together new aviation technologies and existing small airport infrastructure into a transportation model that is more equitable, more economical, and more environmentally friendly for air travel over short distances, compared to today’s status quo. If these changes materialize, the total addressable market (TAM) for small regional flights globally could be $75 billion to $115 billion by 2035, representing 300 to 700 million passengers annually. "We define RAM as the transportation of passengers and goods by air over about 150 to 800 kilometers on five- to 50-passenger aircraft (or the equivalent size for cargo), primarily using smaller regional airports.
