The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the trailblazing black labor union, was organized 99 years ago by A. Philip Randolph on May 8, 1925. Sleeping car porters, predominantly Black men, faced significant challenges and discrimination in their roles on Canadian railways in the early 20th century. They were required to pay for their own uniforms out of their meagre wages, and the higher‐paid position of conductor was closed to Black people until 1954. Porters had to cater to passengers' every need while enduring long hours, sleep deprivation, and poor working conditions. They were often called racially derogatory names like "George" and had to pay for any missing passenger towels or bed sheets in addition to their own uniforms. "We were babysitters, not only for little kids but for adults." -Herb Carvery, sleeping car porter Despite these hardships, porters formed unions such as the Order of Sleeping Car Porters (OSCP) and the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) to advocate for better wages and working conditions. In 1945, the BSCP signed the first collective agreement between a Black union and a Canadian company, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), resulting in higher wages, overtime pay, and paid vacation. The porters' struggle for equal rights and dignity paved the way for generations of Black Canadians. Source:
