🌏 Diversity & Inclusion Alert: A recent eye-opening study from the Crawford School of Public Policy has shed light on the existing disparities within the Australian Public Service (APS) promotional systems. The insightful research conducted by Robert Breunig, David Hansell, and Nu Nu Win reveals a concerning "Asian penalty" in the advancement prospects of federal public servants. 📊 The study, spanning over 20 years of APS workforce data, brings to light that individuals from non-English-speaking backgrounds, including Asians who’ve been in Australia since early childhood and are proficient in English, face considerable barriers in their professional progression. It also points out that staff from English-speaking backgrounds are 70% more likely to receive promotions to executive-level positions. 🗣 This calls for a courageous conversation and action from our leaders to dismantle these barriers and foster a culture that truly values diversity and inclusion. The importance of cultural diversity in the workplace is undeniable—it enhances creativity, productivity, and contributes to an organization’s adaptability and a broader range of skills. We need to champion a future where promotional prospects are based on potential and capability rather than cultural background (don't get me started on 'merit'). 🌐 Together, we can make strides towards a more equitable and inclusive professional environment.
