What’s Ahead for the EU Textiles Industry? Insights from DG GROW Textiles Ecosystem Stakeholder Event on 4 June. Niki Sfakianou, our EU textile policy expert - above all, highlights DG GROW's four key elements that are pivotal for ensuring the textile industry remains robust and forward-thinking. 🔶 Regulation and Innovation: The EU must enforce its existing regulations to maintain a competitive edge globally. Alongside this, innovation is essential. Enhancing the skills of the EU workforce and strengthening border controls and market surveillance are crucial to safeguarding European trade interests. 🔶 Collaborative Efforts: Developing a textile transition pathway requires the collective input of all stakeholders. This collaboration is necessary to align with sustainable and circular economy goals, as emphasized during the recent DG GROW stakeholder event. 🔶 Policy-Driven Change: Initiatives like the EU Strategy for Sustainable & Circular Textiles and regulations concerning ecodesign, waste shipment, and textile labelling are driving significant transformations. A deep understanding of consumer needs and market demands across the EU is vital for this evolution. As we move forward, the integration of these elements, as outlined by DG GROW, calls for a united effort from policymakers, industry leaders, and consumers. Connect with Niki to delve deeper into these insights.

🌐 The textile value chain involves millions of actors globally, with intricate formal and informal connections throughout the production, processing, and consumption phases. The intertwined dynamics of the global textile industry and climate change underscore the need for a comprehensive evaluation of existing policies, practices, and potential for decarbonisation by 2030. Industry’s part in climate change is undeniable; by the same token, they are also an integral part of the solution. Voluntary efforts by the textile and apparel sectors have helped steer change by setting standards, establishing reduction targets and obligations, and joining forces on global initiatives. Nevertheless, more policy frameworks are needed to rise to the challenge before us. 🇪🇺 The EU’s Textile Sector Policy Toolkit features a range of mechanisms to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint and impact on ecosystems. With such mechanisms at policymakers’ fingertips, it’s a matter of wielding them efficiently, including optimising them individually and leveraging them as a system. It’s a careful balancing act: the EU's approach should strengthen protections and streamline regulatory instruments without stifling innovation. It’s time to transform the lessons learned into incubators of change. The Policy Hub endorses four sets of recommendations that seek to leverage the various tools and instruments in the EU’s toolkit to pave the way towards an agile and future-proof textile industry. These recommendations and other key insights will be presented in February 2024, at a dedicated event featuring stakeholders from the public and private sectors. Stay tuned for an announcement in January with registration details. In the meantime, catch a glimpse of our recommendations here. 🌍 EU's Extended Producer Responsibility for Textiles Hey, everyone! I've been reading up about the EU's EPR for textiles initiative, and thought I'd surface to share what I've discovered. After sifting through reports, proposal texts, and analyses, here's what I've learned about EU's planned actions: 🌿 Eco-design requirements for textiles to make them repairable and recyclable 🔖 Introducing a Digital Product Passport for all textile products 🚮 Develop separate collection systems for textile waste 🚫 Restrict the export of textile waste from EU to third countries ♻ Incentivise the Reuse and Recycle business sectors 🌐 Harmonise EPR rules for textiles in all Member States 🔆 Raise consumer awareness about impacts of textile waste The more I delve into this, the more I find myself curious to see it unfurl into reality. Is the fashion industry truly ready for these changes? Will this catalyse innovation or present unexpected hurdles? And let's be real - how many cups of coffee will it take to fully grasp all the implications? ☕️ I've attached the official factsheet for those hungry for more details. But I'm eager to know your take on this. How do you see this initiative shaping our industry landscape? #EUSustainability #ExtendedProducerResponsibility #GreenFuture #EUGreenDeal #CircularEconomy #ClimateAction #Sustainable

The newly released “Sustainable Raw Materials Will Drive Profitability for Fashion and Apparel Brands” Report from BCG/Quantis and Textile Exchange reminds the industry that sustainable raw materials will drive profitability for fashion and apparel brands in the long run. Raw materials can influence a brand’s climate footprint up to 2/3. Why is investing now crucial for a brand’s strategy. Just a few points: - Upcoming globally significant new legislation (Green Papers) will have multiple impacts on operations. - Global climate crisis will disrupt existing supply chains. This might cause scarcity of existing raw materials. - Emerging regulations enable transparency at the POS and reveals the brand’s sustainability footprint. Industry must recognize the urgency of leading the global climate change and reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030. The report states that brands that act now will secure a preferred future supply of raw-materials and might be able to capture an estimated average 6% uplift after five years. At HeiQ AeoniQ™, we are proud of providing a new solution for these so-called new biobased materials. Our cellulosic filament goes beyond any existing cellulosic material. Due to its outstanding fiber properties, HeiQ AeoniQ™ can advantageously replace Polyester and Nylon, and thus prevent further microplastic pollution. Later may be too late. Change before you have to. Team up and contact us today. #TimeForBiobased #Invest4Change #HeiQAeoniQ
