Spotify has launched a new comment section for podcasts, aimed at enhancing interaction between podcasters and listeners. The feature allows listeners to leave comments on #podcast episodes, accessible by scrolling past play controls or visiting the episode page after listening. Initially, comments are private by default, giving creators full control to decide which comments to publish or unpublish. Creators can enable comments for specific episodes or opt-out entirely. All creators can manage comments using the updated #Spotify for Podcasters app, regardless of whether their podcast is hosted by Spotify. They need to claim their show through the app to gain access. Besides comment moderation, creators will receive notifications for new comments and insights into audience #analytics. Spotify reports that engagement with interactive features like Q&As and polls makes listeners four times more likely to return to shows within 30 days and doubles their monthly listening time. The company plans further interactive enhancements for fall and promises ongoing improvements to the comments feature based on user feedback. Spotify for Podcasters is introducing a new feature allowing users to comment directly on podcasts. Creators have a new way to interact with fans in addition to polls and Q&As. By drawing parallels with Spotify's move, in contrast with the news industry where publishers are shutting down comment sections due to issues like moderation challenges, toxicity, and low-quality discourse, Spotify's decision to enable comments on podcasts goes against this trend for several strategic reasons, you can imagine. Let's see how this goes. https://lnkd.in/df6t9Y66

🎙️ Monday Morning Podcast Roundup Swapping in an Adam's article I found from Podnews this morning as recommendation number one – some great takes on YouTube and Podcasts. I have a heavy bias and spend lots of time creating for, learning about, and consuming (including podcasts) on YouTube. As such, if starting a show in 2023, I would strongly consider doing video as well, even if you're only uploading an uncut webcam feed to start. There are increasingly better tools rolling out like the podcast-specific playlists and the links between Shorts and longer videos. YouTube also provides excellent data and potentially some discoverability. Safety Third | Building the World’s Largest Bear Trap - Safety Third 79 https://lnkd.in/eybQtS8h Wildly inconsistent at times in their uploads, sometimes unhinged and off the rails, the science crew generally covers some interesting topics, deep dives into their video processes, YouTube gripes, and more. There's not a ton of consistency here, and they break all the "podcasting" rules. But it's a great example of how shows on YouTube usually lie somewhere between a podcast in the most traditional sense and a longer-form video from your favorite YouTubers. YouTube is getting into podcasts in a serious way, but it's not all straightforward. There is a massive opportunity here, with Android users significantly under-represented amongst podcast listeners globally, and YouTube being the biggest media consumption platform in the world. But there are challenges here too. Will YouTube "play nicely" with the existing podcast ecosystem? Are they coming too much from a video-first perspective? How will RSS feeds even work? In the week that Google announced that Google Podcasts will be shuttered in 2024, how will YouTube and YouTube Music take up the slack? I've gone pretty deep into YouTube and podcasts as I see them. There are still unanswered questions, but I do have concerns. Make a drink and have a read :-) https://lnkd.in/ePm_YFHu

Spotify is launching the ability to leave comments on podcasts. The company already lets Spotify podcasters offer polls and Q&As, so this new feature could give creators new ways to interact with their audiences. Comments will be private by default (similar to Q&A responses), so creators will have to approve each comment they want to appear. Creators can choose to have comments available for their whole show or just for specific episodes, and, if they don’t want to allow comments at all, they can opt out of the feature. For podcast creators who want to grow their audiences, building a stronger relationship with their listeners and fans goes a long way. And in order to amplify their presence, creators need tools that give them the functionality, insights, and flexibility to manage their shows and engage fans anytime, anywhere. And interactivity is a feature that already has listeners and creators buzzing: More than 9 million unique Spotify listeners have interacted with a Q&A or poll just this year, and there’s been 80% year-over-year growth in the number of total Q&A responses and votes from listeners. #spotify #audio #podcast #interactivity #audience #creators #listeners #ott

According to a recent UK report by Spotify, Gen Z is emerging as the most rapidly expanding audience for music and podcasts. In the initial six months of 2023, this demographic witnessed a remarkable 58% increase in year-on-year podcast consumption, with 39% of them preferring to listen at an accelerated pace. Additionally, approximately 53% of Gen Z podcast enthusiasts in the UK reported discovering and learning about communities outside their own through podcast content.

What do you think about Spotify rolling out video podcasts beyond just those hosted with them? And, what do you think about some of the details of how it's being done (ie not via RSS feed, stats therefore not within your standard hosting stats, but also not using RSS feed at all from there, even if you have audio only eps)? It's something I'm monitoring closely, curious to see how much impact it will really have. YouTube still feels like the video spot, and given the complexities above, I'd be curious of the value comparatively. Over time, though, I'm sure this will evolve. Lots of moving parts in podcasting right now with video. P.S. Don't just jump on the "we must have full on camera video" bandwagon, without understanding all this a lot more. What to do with video, YouTube, etc. depends on your audience, goals, bandwidth, budget and more. Audio is still where deep engagement happens, and should not be overlooked for the sake of a pretty (or not so) video (especially if you're targeting a busy, professional audience, like most people I speak to). https://lnkd.in/dGNsAs5j
