Dublin City University has secured approval from Science Foundation Ireland to extend the timeframe for their Centres for Research Training program to allow a fifth intake of fifteen additional PhDs in 2023. These PhD projects will draw on unused funding. DCU has made savings on its training budget, unused stipend funds due to placement payments, and withdrawals from previous students. This new cohort brings the total number of PhD students funded through the centres to 85 (one of whom graduated this October.) These students are spread across nine of DCU's schools in four of the five faculties. These programs are multi-disciplinary and practical in nature. DCU is a partner institution in SFI Centre for Research Training in Digitally-Enhanced Reality (d-real), SFI Centre for Research Training in Machine Learning and SFI Centre for Research Training in Artificial Intelligence Three principal investigators at DCU were instrumental in securing the original €12M in funding for the Centres: Noel O'Connor, Suzanne Little and Alan F. “How funding flows and projects are led reflects an assumption in the field that research-practice partnerships require seasoned researchers, and there is a limited pool of talent for these roles, particularly talent that reflects the communities being studied and served. We challenged this assumption by recruiting emerging scholars with connections to minoritized communities as leaders of the project’s research-practice partnerships. The first chapter, a hopeful beginning, it seemed, But hurdles and challenges were more than they'd dreamed. The mountains of papers, the late-night despair, Yet they pressed on with passion, with courage to bear. In the laboratory, where experiments danced, They toiled tirelessly, their hands ever enhanced. From beakers to petri dishes, data they'd glean, Though setbacks were plenty, they clung to their dream. Through sleepless nights, thesis drafts, and debate, They wrestled with theories, they questioned their fate. 🎓Navigating the Struggles of Pursuing a PhD:- As a fellow Ph.D. candidate, I believe it's crucial to shed light on the often overlooked realities that come with this academic pursuit. The path to obtaining a doctoral degree is filled with both triumphs and trials, and it's essential that we acknowledge and support one another through these challenges. Today, I want to share some insights into the struggles that many of us face during our Ph.D. journey. 1. It's not uncommon to feel like we don't belong in the academic world or that our accomplishments are merely a stroke of luck. But remember, you are not alone in this feeling, and your hard work is a testament to your capabilities. 2. The pursuit of a Ph.D. demands an enormous investment of time and effort. Juggling research, coursework, teaching commitments, and personal life can be overwhelming. The never-ending to-do list can sometimes make us feel like we're running against the clock, but it's essential to take a step back and prioritize self-care to maintain our well-being throughout this demanding journey. 3. Many Ph.D. candidates face the dilemma of choosing between academic and industry careers. The pressure to decide on our future paths can be daunting, and it's essential to remember that our worth isn't defined solely by the career we choose. Seek guidance from mentors and explore diverse opportunities to make an informed decision aligned with your passion. 4. The Ph.D. journey can sometimes be isolating, with long hours spent in the lab or library. Connecting with peers, attending seminars, and joining academic groups can alleviate this sense of isolation and foster a supportive community that understands the unique challenges we face. 5. Amidst the struggles, let's not forget to celebrate our victories, no matter how minor they may seem. Whether it's successfully defending a proposal, publishing a paper, or mastering a complex technique, each achievement is a testament to our dedication and progress. 6. Sharing our struggles can be daunting, but it is through vulnerability and support that we grow together as a community. Let's create an open dialogue where we can lift each other up during tough times, celebrate our successes, and remind one another that we are capable of making a significant impact through our research.
