IES invites applications for two new grant programs for FY 2025 through NCER’s Accelerate, Transform, Scale (ATS) Initiative: ⚙️ Through the Research Networks Focused on Critical Problems of Education Policy and Practice Grants Program, NCER invites applications for an ATS Initiative Hub. The Hub will serve as a resource center for applicants and grantees in ATS Initiative programs, support the establishment of new ATS Initiative programs, and provide high level support to IES in coordinating existing programs that fall under the ATS Initiative. 🌱 Through the From Seedlings to Scale (S2S) program, IES will invest in innovative products, policies, and processes within an identified focus area through three phases of increasing funding and time duration to support ideas as they grow from seedlings to scalable solutions. For FY2025, IES invites bold thinkers to apply for Phase One projects focused on Seamless Personalized Education Experiences Delivered at Scale (SPEED at Scale). Applications for both programs are due August 15, 2024. Letters of Intent may be submitted by July 11, 2024. National and international rankings have become essential tools for assessing and comparing the performance of educational institutions globally. These rankings are based on a number of criteria, including the quality of research carried out by academics and the effective transfer of that knowledge to students. Academic research is one of the cornerstones of higher education institutions. Rankings often measure the quality of this research through various indicators, such as the number of publications in high-impact scientific journals, citations of these papers in other studies, and the receipt of national and international awards and recognitions. A high performance on these indicators suggests that the institution generates cutting-edge knowledge, contributing significantly to the advancement of science and technology. On the other hand, knowledge transfer is essential to ensure that students not only acquire information, but also develop skills and competences that enable them to face real-world challenges. The rankings assess this criterion by looking, for example, at the relationship between students and professors, the quality of the educational programme, exchange opportunities and the employability of graduates. An institution that succeeds in transferring knowledge efficiently will produce better prepared and more competitive professionals. However, it is vital to consider that no ranking is definitive or absolute. Each is based on a specific methodology and gives priority to certain criteria over others. Therefore, when evaluating an institution, it is advisable not to rely solely on its position in a ranking, but also on other factors, such as its mission, vision and long-term objectives. In conclusion, national and international rankings are valuable tools for evaluating the performance of educational institutions in terms of research and knowledge transfer. Although they offer an important perspective, they should be interpreted with caution and complemented with other sources of information to get a complete picture of the quality and impact of an institution.

Acting Director, Institute of Education Sciences and Commissioner, National Center for Education Evaluation at U.S. Department of Education
It’s always an exciting time when the Institute of Education Sciences releases the Requests for Applications (RFAs) for its primary research grant programs! This past week, our National Center for Education Research announced its FY25 Education Research Grants, which we affectionately know as “305A.” If you missed it, check it out here: https://lnkd.in/e7ngm4V5. Among the things I’m most excited about is a new requirement in the RFA that potential grantees submit an Engagement and Dissemination Plan as part of their application. This new requirement builds upon long-standing IES expectations that work be relevant, useful, and used. It asks applicants to describe how input from learners, educators, policymakers, researchers, parents/caregivers, and other relevant audiences has informed the development of their application and how those same (and perhaps other) parties will be engaged in the research process and the dissemination of findings. While this new requirement qualifies as “old news” to some IES grantees—many of whom have worked to center student and community voice in their work for years—for others, it will represent a change and, perhaps, a challenge. I believe, unequivocally, that efforts to build a more inclusive system of education R&D will increase quality, usefulness, and use of IES-funded research. Indeed, I believe this work is necessary for us to achieve our goal of ensuring every learner achieves their fullest potential. I look forward with anticipation to see how applicants, both new and old, partner with us in this effort! (Standard government caveat: nothing in this post is meant to alter, in any manner, requirements or recommendations outlined in the official 305A Request for Applications!)

Great to see this underscores earlier acknowledgments that excellence comes in different shapes and sizes - so important (and reassuring). Aware there are those of us in institutions who have numbers/capacity to potentially attend multiple sessions (where there’s space) and others who are a bit overfaced by the sheer number of workshops, so I will very much be signing up with an eye on what this could do for the sector and ongoing dialogue. Would be fab if that spills out into open discussion beyond the workshops. Certainly happy to share or feed in thoughts/key points on sessions I can get to with any contacts on here (and beyond) who can’t attend. Would love to hear take homes from other workshops too. Let’s do this well for everyone. #cultureovercompetition #researchculture #REF2029
Expressions of interest are now open for participation in upcoming online workshops to co-develop indicators for the assessment of the People, Culture and Environment (PCE) element of REF 2029. The workshops are open to anyone with an interest in the REF, research assessment, and research culture in higher education institutions. This includes, but is not limited to: senior university leaders, research culture specialists, professional services staff (e.g. HR professionals, REF managers), research-related staff (e.g. librarians, technicians, careers advisors), academic and research staff at all career stages, doctoral researchers, knowledge exchange and public engagement specialists, representatives from learned societies and disciplinary bodies, policy professionals, funders, and users of research. Details about the workshops, timeline and how to submit your expression of interest can be found on Vitae’s website: https://lnkd.in/eg_S_eVT These workshops are part of the REF PCE indicators project commissioned by Research England on behalf of the UK's four higher education funding bodies*. The project is co-led by Technopolis Group and Vitae, in partnership with sector organisations and networks that bring a range of perspectives and expertise on different aspects of people, culture and environment. *The four UK Higher Education funding bodies are Research England, Scottish Funding Council, Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) - Cyngor Cyllido Addysg Uwch Cymru (CCAUC) and Department for the Economy NI.

📣 Calling all UK Universities looking to upskill their their researchers, students and colleagues for grant application success! Anchored In is offering 5 UK universities the opportunity to host one of our extremely popular Good Grant Guide workshops....for free! Workshops will be offered on a first come first served basis so if you are interested, please do contact Nicola Musgrove asap to book your session. Testimonials from previous workshops include: "Great workshop, incredibly informative and the instructors are very knowledgeable. We were offered first-hand experience and valuable insight from the perspectives of applicants and accessors. Lots of wisdom shared on the how best to articulate the narrative, things to consider when applying. Overall, a very enlightening workshop and I would thoroughly recommend applicants who wish to go for KTN to attend the workshop, or as a skills session for anyone who apply for grants." ~ Jiafeng Feng, University of Liverpool "When you need an assessment score of almost 90% to get your proposal funded, you cannot afford to lose marks or fail to pick up marks that would have been available if you just understood the system better. The Good Grant Guide points out where and why marks can be won or lost. Within minutes of the webinar finishing, I was putting the principles that I had just learned into action." ~ Steve Fuller, University of Nottingham #universities #uk #freeworkshop #traininganddevelopment #grantwriting #grants #fundingnews

Building partnerships with universities, corporations, non-profits, and government organizations interested in collaborating on all things digital learning: courses, content, programs, and platforms
Great points from UPCEA regarding "alternative credentials." "These new credentials are often prefixed by “non” (noncredit programs leading to nondegrees for nontraditional students) rather than defined by what they truly are: important, alternative means of acquiring education and university-based credentials." https://lnkd.in/eA6TiAzn
