🌍🌐 "The DestinE launch showcased the strength of European collaboration" Following the launch event of the second phase of the #DestinationEarth (DestinE) initiative of the European Commission held on 10 June 2024 at the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) LUMI supercomputer facilities in Kajaani, Finland, Florence Rabier, Director-General of ECMWF, and irina sandu, Director for DestinE at ECMWF reflect on the advancements made so far and future plans of the ambitious initiative in an interview. 🤝🇪🇺 They highlight the event as a celebration of European collaboration and innovation. By working closely with partners from over 90 institutions across Europe, ECMWF has made significant progress in the development of the first two high-priority #DigitalTwins and the Digital Twin Engine. Florence Rabier emphasises that DestinE marks a milestone in ECMWF’s history, enhancing our capabilities to respond and adapt to the challenges posed by #GlobalWarming and extreme events. Irina Sandu discusses the exciting potential of recent breakthroughs in #ArtificialIntelligence and #MachineLearning to further improve our weather and climate prediction capabilities and the crucial support of EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU). Making #DestinE a reality is only possible with the support of our Member States, our strong partnerships with National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, excellence centres for climate science in Europe and the supercomputers made available by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. This is a great team effort, bringing together the strengths of three world-class European institutions, ECMWF, EUMETSAT and the European Space Agency - ESA under the Leadership of the Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CNECT) of the European Commission. 👉 Read the full interview to learn more about the first milestones of DestinE, main challenges and why we need a system like this: https://lnkd.in/euMGwZ6m

EUdata4oceandecade - Today 19 June 2024 -14:30 CET - "Data for the UN Ocean Decade – A European focus. The first webinar will introduce Earth observation, in situ, and modelled marine data, how to access them through the European platforms of Copernicus, EUMETSAT, and EMODnet, and their possible applications. In addition, during the webinar, an interactive session in which participants will be asked to share the challenges they face when obtaining or using EO marine data will be featured. Such a user-driven approach will allow for the feedback collected to be used to structure the remainder of the webinar series." https://lnkd.in/evUj9k5n
Enabling the generation and open access to ocean data is key to support ocean science. And yet, despite the multiplication of data from diverse sources, there are major data gaps to fill. The Ocean Decade provides the global ocean community with a unique opportunity to transform the way ocean data and information are produced, shared, managed, and used globally and equitably. During the first webinar in the "Data for the UN Ocean Decade - A European focus" series, co-organised by the #OceanDecade Coordination Office for Ocean Data Sharing, experts from #OceanData will introduce how the data and products developed by European organisations such as the Copernicus Marine Service, EUMETSAT and EMODnet can support the achievement of the 10 ocean-related challenges that we have identified for the Decade. 🗓️ Wednesday, June 19 🕒 14:30-16:30 (CEST) 💻 Online 🔗For more info and registration: https://ow.ly/gNlo50Sk4jt

📢On behalf of the STELLAR project, Telespazio France attended the 7th DRMKC Annual Seminar on November 21 last year. Axelle Pomies and Laurent Arzel participated in the parallel workshop "Early Warning for All Europeans: Fostering a Common European Approach to Early Warning Systems to Reach All Europeans", which aimed to bring together Member States, scientists, and EWS practitioners to discuss a common European policy approach to early warning systems and address the key priorities for a comprehensive and practical EWS for all Europeans. During the introductory speeches, Axelle shared experience from Galileo EWSS (Emergency Warning Satellite Service), using satellite navigation systems for alert broadcast. The knowledge shared, and connections made during this event are very valuable. A big thanks to the organizers and all contributors for such an enriching seminar ! #publicwarningsystem #EWSS #Galileo #DRMKCAnnualSeminar #DRM #DRMKC2023 📍About Emergency Warning Satellite Service: The Emergency Warning Satellite Service (EWSS) is a new service currently being introduced in Galileo. It exploits the advantage of the Galileo infrastructure and signals to put at the disposal of national civil protection authorities a satellite channel for sending alerts to population in case of looming disaster. The service is introduced as a complementary means to national alert systems, e.g. when traditional terrestrial alerting systems cannot operate at full capacity, or even collapse. 📍More about the STELLAR project: The STELLAR is a project funded under the European Union ‘s programme Horizon Europe and managed by the European Commission DG DEFIS. The objective of STELLAR is to prepare the introduction of EWSS in the Galileo 1st Generation. More specifically, STELLAR aims at the consolidation of Galileo EWSS concept, by developing a full representative prototype architecture, and by organizing demonstrations in the European Union to evidence the characteristic and performance of this future alert service. 👉More about the 7th DRMKC Annual Seminar : https://lnkd.in/ehC44VCR Telespazio

The #ClimateCrisis is a fossil fuel crisis. Until we make an accelerated transition to renewable energy, we will continue to see temperatures climb with alarming consequences for nature and people. Nature also has a critical part to play in the solution, including the world’s high integrity forests. They are essential for a stable climate. Without their active role in removing CO2 from the atmosphere, the world would already be at least 0.5°C hotter than it is today.
2023 was the warmest calendar year on record, close to 1.5°C above the pre-industrial level, according to the EU’s Copernicus ECMWF implemented by ECMWF. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ezmfhhqi

🛰 Major General of the Space Command, Isaac M. Crespo, will share his views on the present and future of the #spacesector as keynote speaker on Wednesday 21st at #SSSIF2024 "We understand sustainability in space exploration as the means to be able to continue these activities indefinitely. In that context, it must allow access to space activities in a fair and legitimate way for different actors, while preserving the space environment for future generations. In our view, the only way to address the sustainability of space is through international cooperation and, of course, international legislation regulating space in its various activities." 🗣 If you want to know more about the 2024 milestones of MESPA, don't miss the full interview: https://lnkd.in/dYA4nn5Y

Just got back from European Space Agency (ESA) representing the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) at the International Relations Committee (IRC) and Plan for European Cooperating States (PECS) meetings held at the ESA ESRIN centre for Earth Observation in Rome. Interesting developments in the European Space Arena which is rapidly growing. It was very interesting to see the potential use of Copernicus Satellite Data and to get a much deeper understanding of the impact of Climate Change from the various models that were demonstrated to us. It was also quite alarming to see how Climate Change is having such a negative effect on the world's Eco System. Seeing the data first hand makes one realise the amount of work that needs to be done to mitigate this problem. It also outlines the need to have such immediate data systems in a country's infrastructure to help to furnish policy and decision making based on this data and not on GDP and market factors.
