🚀 The Destination Earth launch event drew an enthusiastic crowd to CSC’s Kajaani Data Center in June. The high-level quests were impressed by the achievements of the initiative and the contribution that LUMI and CSC have made to its success thus far. ✨ European Commission Vice-President Margrethe Vestager observed that the use of such advanced technology for climate research is a prime example of the green and digital twin transition where both climate action and technological development are taken to the next level. 🌍 The Destination Earth initiative aims to develop a highly accurate digital model of the Earth. This has the potential to revolutionize climate research and policy-making by making it possible to simulate and analyse Earth systems in real-time with high accuracy. There are nearly 1,200 Earth observation satellites in orbit, built by private companies, that are capturing huge amounts of data to monitor environmental and economic change. Companies in this industry, which rely heavily on defense and intelligence government contracts, are now looking for climate-focused customers that could leverage data from space to generate value for their businesses and for the planet. That was one of the takeaways from a paper written by the World Economic Forum and the consulting firm Deloitte that was discussed at the WEF meeting that concluded last week in Davos, Switzerland. This has been a topic of interest to the World Economic Forum, which in 2021 published another paper titled “Space for Net Zero” explaining the crucial role of satellites in understanding climate change. Brett Loubert, a Deloitte partner and head of the company’s space practice, hosted a panel at Davos on the topic of Earth observation satellites and what the industry can do to attract new users and customers. #wef #satellitetechnology #satellitedata #davos #earthobservation

What if we would have a digital twin of the whole planet? What if we could query it for data, run simulations that would inform better decision making in the face of climate change, biodiversity management, agricultural and urban planning, etc. ? Well, as of today we do. Today, the EU launched "Destination Earth" (aka DestinE) - a hi-res digital twin of our Earth’s systems - to model, monitor and simulate natural phenomena, challenges and opportunities for the planet and the related human activities. Data from the Copernicus satellite system, ESA, EUMETSAT, ECMW, feed into a digital twinning system brought together at supercomputing centers across the EU. DestinE’s cloud based digital services platform not only provides evidence-based decision support (e.g. for policy making), data and modelling services for research, education and innovation communities, but also tools for storytelling & public outreach. I am glad to share the first ever Strategic Research and Innovation (SRIA) on #EarthObservation produced under the Knowledge Centre on Earth Observation of the European Commission Joint Research Centre, where I work since the beginning of last year. I am honored to be be part of the knowledge management structure of the JRC in #Ispra and happy to promote this massive and important piece of work. A valuable contribution to the advancement of research and technology development under the remit of Copernicus. - I note with interest the emphasis the report puts on ocean and water observation This is in line with our, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, endeavour to enhance ocean observation and to extend satellite-based monitoring approaches to freshwater systems ("from the source to the sea").

🛰 🌍 The first-ever Strategic Agenda on Research and Innovation (SRIA) on Earth Observation has just been published. 🛰 🌍 Produced under the guidance of the European Commission’s Knowledge Centre on Earth Observation, the work will steer the evolution of Copernicus, the EU flagship component for Earth observation. The SRIA for Earth Observation collects inputs and requirements from users, Member States, Copernicus Entrusted Entities and Agencies to create the basis for the new research calls and topics in order to enable #CopernicusEvolution. Among the key topics identified: 👉 The acknowledged importance of the Copernicus Thematic Hubs, to guide cross-service research towards specific topics 👉 The issues and potential of emerging computing and #data infrastructures 👉 The opportunities provided by #AI and Machine Learning 👉 The need for synergies and partnerships at European and Global level In a fast evolving field such as #space, establishing strong partnerships and communicating with a broad range of stakeholders is essential to drive innovation in a proficient way. Today, #EarthObservation is playing a key role by providing evidence and scientific understanding of the issues at stake. 🎤 Dennis Dell'Ara - Algorithm Developer at e-GEOS - is in #Athens for the 2024 𝐈𝐄𝐄𝐄 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦, which this year is held under the theme "𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘚𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦". 🌲 During the event, he presented an #ArtificialIntelligence algorithm - produced by an #e_GEOS team - for detecting #deforestation activities through the processing of SAR data from #COSMO_SkyMed First- and Second-Generation constellation #satellites. The software is capable of providing more comprehensive #forest monitoring than optical-based solutions, in particular during the rainy season. Presenting the results of model validation tests, Dennis Dell'Ara highlighted the effectiveness of integrating #AI and #SAR data to monitor and safeguard the tropical #rainforest, which is a critical natural asset fundamental to the existence of our planet and the maintenance of its #climate balance.
