#FridayMusing #AdviceforCandidates #AdvicewhenRecruiting #LongPostAlert.... On a trip to New York last week we walked past Trump Tower (with the motorcade parked outside) on the way to The Metropolitan Museum of Art where we saw this statue. This #GotMeThinking The word #candidate is derived from the past participle of ‘candido’ - ‘I make bright or make shine’. Citizens standing for election in Ancient Rome donned especially bright togas to distinguish themselves from the voting public. Whilst it would be nice to think that the brightness of their apparel was a symbol of the purity of their intentions, it is more likely that this was simply a way to #StandOut in a crowd. Rubbed chalk was used to get the toga nice and bright. Hence '#Candidate'. Leaving politics aside, this is worth remembering when you are in the market for a #NewRole and freshening up your #CV or #LinkedInProfile. #FirstImpressionsMatter. #Recruiters – whether in house or agency – need a reason to stop to take notice of what you have to offer. As a #Candidate, why not make this as easy as possible? There is no shortage of guidance available on how to put yourself across well in a CV but if you’ve not been in the market for a while, its particularly important to consider the increasing impact of #MachineLearning on the selection process, especially the role of CV parsing software. A #TopTip is to seek feedback from any recruiters in your #Network. The #etymology of ‘candidate’ is also worth remembering when recruiting. We’re each prone to all sorts of #biases, some of which might obscure the #qualities or #potential an individual has to offer. A #TopTip when recruiting is to think carefully through the different ways in which you intend to make your choice. Are you seeing candidates through other #perspectives than your own? What #assessment methods are you using? Are you confident that the very best candidates have every opportunity to shine? After all, the ‘shiny bright surface’ for those you spot first might just be chalk. Candidly speaking, in the market for talent - whether you are selling or buying - it is always worth taking a moment to pause and reflect before making your move. Hanover Fox are #HappyToAdvise
