A high percentage of Australians live regionally, rurally or remotely. For those with a cancer diagnosis who live in these areas there are a variety of challenges that present. Access to life saving diagnostics and treatments, access to specific care teams and ongoing supportive care are just a few of these challenges. Adding to these are the potential stressors of: distance required to travel to access care, and time away from family, friends, home and work to access support, all of which come with significant financial burden. Equity in care for people living rurally, remotely or regionally is currently a challenge for our healthcare system. Where possible tele-health can assist in bridging some of the gap in care for people with cancer. Program Spotlight: Addressing the Impact of the Pandemic on Cancer Care and Access to Cancer Screening for Underserved Communities is a Community of Care, made up of Cancer Support Community Arizona, Wesley Community & Health Centers, and Salud en Balance that was funded through the 2023 Community Health Improvement Grants at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. This team works collectively to address mental health, cancer, and access to care - three of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center's prioritized significant health needs. An estimated 206,000 Arizonans missed breast/colorectal/prostate cancer screenings due to COVID-19, disproportionately impacting many individuals. To address this, the Community of Care utilizes the Train the Trainer model to educate Spanish-speaking Community Health Workers from Salud en Balance to engage underserved cancer patients and residents needing cancer screenings. Together, this Community of Care provides equitable opportunities grounded in acceptance and respect, which promotes strong individuals, families, and communities. September is #childhoodcancerawarenessmonth – our annual opportunity to create awareness of the impact of cancer in so many children and their families around the world. With the development of economy and medical conditions in some areas, survival rates of children with cancer keep on rising. However, this improvement is lagging in less-developed countries. During September we seek to highlight these inequities in access to care and treatment. Over a lifetime, it is estimated that #cervicalcancer will develop in up to 5% of the unscreened population. Improved communication to increase knowledge and awareness, and facilitate equitable access to prevention tools such as #screening can reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer. Take the example of #Peruvian women in the fight against cervical cancer. This video highlights the empowerment, education, and collaboration journey that is changing access to cervical cancer prevention. It demonstrates effective community-based outreach programs for cervical cancer elimination and meeting women where they are with groundbreaking methods of self-collection for cervical cancer screening.  This initiative represents a broader effort involving the Peruvian Ministry of Health, government bodies, patient advocates, and other partners like #roche . Discover how multidisciplinary teams (social workers and nurses) help cancer patients to have accessibility to the HEALTH system. Our real-world data started from a pilot project at the largest cancer hospital in Northern Greece at Theagenio where over 300 patients joined the Kapa3 programme: We saw  📍the difficulty of cancer patients in the healthcare system,📍the many inequalities that exist in access across countries 📍that there is no correlation between a patient's financial situation and their ability to access it. 📝 Patients' access has been shown to depend on factors such as place of residence, education and demographic group, and the inability of many of them to do what is best for their treatment is weakened by factors such as age, frailty and/or mobility. At Kapa3 we are committed to improving the quality of life of cancer patients through personalised interventions. ATLANTA, #June #25 #2024 CHC: Creating Healthier Communities proudly announces the #latest advancements in its Breast and Cervical Cancer Initiative #BCCI a collaborative #health #equity #effort The initiative, now in its second year of implementation, focuses on addressing barriers to accessing breast and cervical cancer care among Black and Latine communities in #Atlanta Through strategic partnerships with community-based organizations, CHC aims to significantly #improve cancer outcomes and #promote health equity. The initiative's first year #saw #impressive #results including increased clinical #services by 137%, expanded #community #engagement by 127%, and the #development of critical partnerships aimed at enhancing the breast and cervical cancer care continuum. Moreover, innovative approaches such as transportation assistance, language-specific outreach, and outreach in non-traditional health settings have significantly improved accessibility to care. The initiative's first year saw impressive results, including increased clinical services by 137%, expanded community engagement by 127%, and the development of critical partnerships aimed at enhancing the breast and cervical cancer care continuum The Breast and Cervical Cancer Initiative represents CHC's commitment to community-informed program development and leveraging grantmaking to support evidence-informed, equitable, and responsive initiatives. Research indicates that clinical care influences only about 20% of health and wellness. The remaining 80% of health is driven by health-related behaviors and physical environment and socioeconomic factors such as education, employment, and community safety, often called the social determinants or social drivers of health. By actively engaging community perspectives and expertise, CHC works to decrease the greatest barriers to health equity. Congratulations to Dr. Katrin Julia Kaal for receiving a New Health Investigator Grant for research exploring a provincial framework to organize and deliver survivorship care for adolescent and young adult cancer survivors. Young adult cancer survivors - survivors diagnosed during childhood, adolescence, or young adulthood - experience unique challenges in accessing quality follow-up care given personal and professional changes that happen over these years, and current healthcare system challenges. This research will design, implement, and evaluate a new approach in the context of the Nova Scotia health system to provide young adult cancer survivors with the care they need. This research could help improve young adult cancer survivors’ care experiences and health outcomes, as well as enable access to high-quality, safe, and effective survivorship care for survivors of pediatric, adolescent, and young adult cancer.
