Iain Foulkes shares an in-depth look into Cancer Grand Challenges, an initiative to redefine cancer research through innovation and collaboration. Nearly a decade ago, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) explored new funding models to tackle complex issues in cancer research. Inspired by initiatives like the XPRIZE and Gates Foundation’s Grand Challenges, Cancer Grand Challenges was born. With £200m invested across 11 teams and over 700 collaborators, this program encourages multi-disciplinary, global teams to tackle specific yet broad challenges. In 2020, they partnered with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), uniting the world’s largest cancer research funders. This #GrandChallenge changes the approach to funding and forms a social movement in scientific inquiry, opening avenues for high-risk, high-reward research.
