Knowledgeable CMs must understand that as reimbursement segues from traditional FFS where reimbursement increases when more interventions and/or procedures are performed to VBP where reimbursement is based on accomplishing the best outcome for the patient while being delivered at the appropriate level of care. Performing excessive and/or unnecessary interventions in higher than necessary care levels, such as acute care hospitals, leads to financial losses to providers under VBP. For-profit actors are increasingly investing and acquiring healthcare facilities. It should never be a trade-off capital vs clinical, and some key elements should be always preserved, among others: HCP independence, patient protection, investment in innovation and technology, commitment to value-based care.
