Fire-rated doors are designed and constructed to help contain the spread of fire within a building, compartmentalizing it to protect occupants and property. Here are some benefits of fire-rated doors: 1. **Fire Protection**: The primary benefit of fire-rated doors is their ability to resist the spread of fire and smoke from one area to another within a building. They help in compartmentalizing a fire and providing a safe means of egress for occupants. 2. **Life Safety**: Fire-rated doors play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of building occupants by providing a barrier against the spread of fire and smoke, allowing people more time to evacuate the building in case of a fire. 3. **Property Protection**: Fire-rated doors help in protecting property by containing the fire to a specific area, minimizing the damage caused by the fire and smoke spread. 4. **Building Code Compliance**: Fire-rated doors are often required by building codes and regulations, especially in commercial and public buildings, to ensure the safety of occupants and property. 5. **Insurance Requirements**: Many insurance companies may require the installation of fire-rated doors as a safety measure to reduce the risk of fire-related damage and potential insurance claims. 6. **Increased Safety Measures**: Fire-rated doors are part of a comprehensive fire protection system that includes fire alarms, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, and other fire safety measures to provide a safe environment for building occupants. 7. **Durability**: Fire-rated doors are constructed with materials that can withstand high temperatures and exposure to fire for a specified period, ensuring their functionality during a fire emergency. 8. **Peace of Mind**: Having fire-rated doors installed in a building can provide peace of mind to occupants, building owners, and property managers, knowing that there are measures in place to help mitigate the impact of a fire. Overall, fire-rated doors are an essential component of fire safety systems in buildings, providing critical protection against the spread of fire and smoke, enhancing life safety, and helping to minimize property damage during a fire emergency.

Closing a door can be the difference between living and dying in a fire. Door magnets, auto closures, smoke seals and other hardware helps give people a chance and are designed to work with alarm systems to automatically create compartments during a fire to provide added time for people to get the help they need, especially those who cannot evacuate due to a disability. This is why I wrote a proposal on the International Code for means of egress, to give these people a communication device in horizontal exit compartments. Currently, the code only requires a device on one side of a door near the elevator. If this fire was in that zone near the elevator where the device is currently only required, and the person has to go to the other side of the door to live, they lose access to that device to let someone know they are trapped. The goal is continuous communication. NFPA 72 - 24.3.14.3 * The pathway survivability requirements in 24.3.14.4 through 24.3.14.16 shall apply to notification and communications circuits and other circuits necessary to "ensure the continued operation" of the emergency communications system.
