#OSHA is looking to beat the heat! The agency has proposed a new rule in an effort to combat the hazards of occupational heat exposure. The proposal is published just as the US settles into another season of heat waves. The proposed rule is a comprehensive standard mandating that employers develop a heat injury and illness prevention plan to assess and manage heat hazards in their workplaces. It sets requirements for identifying heat risks, implementing engineering and work practice controls at two specified heat trigger levels (an initial and a high heat trigger), creating a heat illness and emergency response plan, providing training for employees and supervisors, and maintaining records. This rule would apply to all employers in general industry, construction, maritime, and agriculture sectors, with some exceptions, covering both outdoor and indoor work environments. As summer heats up, companies must have heat safety plans in place for their workers. For example, Phoenix recently passed a heat safety ordinance to better protect outdoor workers during the grueling summer months. OSHA is developing its own heat safety standards, but there is no set deadline. In the meantime, cities like Phoenix are leading the charge to protect workers with local laws. We’ve already experienced icy conditions this winter but are you assessing the risk of ice, frost and snow on your site? Slips and trips are higher during the Autumn and Winter than any other season so it’s important to put measures in place to reduce the risks where possible. Start by identifying key areas that need to be kept clear and dealt with as soon as the temperatures plummet. Walkways, entrance ways and car parks usually have a high number of pedestrianised traffic. But don’t forget about those hidden corners where materials might be stored. Make sure you have a procedure in place to prevent an icy surface forming and / or keep pedestrians off the slippery surface; use grit or similar on areas prone to be slippery in these conditions; consider covering walkways to reduce ice and frost forming; divert pedestrians to less slippery walkways and barrier off existing ones; and put up signage to identify and alert workers of potential slippery and icy areas. *Source HSE - Icy conditions and winter weather What are you doing to protect your workers during the ice, frost and snow? #constructiondesignmanagement #healthandsafety

Monday's Toolbox Talk Topic: Winter Site Safety As cold weather approaches, we want to remind everyone of the hazards it brings and how to combat them. The temperature is dropping which can cause icy surfaces for ladders and equipment. Be sure to check before using the equipment for any accumulated ice. Make sure to keep fresh thawed water on hand for employees to stay hydrated. In order to prevent ice buildup you can use sand, salt, or a de-icing material. Watch your step in colder conditions to prevent slips and falls. Protect your skin by wearing gloves and hats (that fit under a hardhat). Weather is inescapable when working construction, but you can still keep yourself safe in many different conditions. #ToolboxTalk #SafetyFirst
