Waste vs. Reuse. The choice is much easier because 40+ food service providers in #YYC and #Canmore are offering #reusable instead of #singleuse. Earthware containers can be returned to the bottle depot for a #refund thanks to the partnership with Alberta Bottle Depot Association - ABDA. https://lnkd.in/gQ6SCRh2 #zerowastetakeout #RinseAndReturnForRefund

This is how we do it! The top three single use plastic polluters are the top three water bottlers. LADWP dispenses cleaner water than what comes bottled in plastic (without the incredibly high microplastic levels and leaching estrogenic chemicals from the bottled!) and it’s delivered at a fraction of the cost and in the most environmentally sustainable method possible - through pipes underground without transport from Fiji or on roads with gas! LADWP provides grants to put tap water in the public realm just like in the days of old when civilizations were built around public access to water. Hydration stations cut out the polluting middleman of Coke, Pepsi and Nestle who are simply putting tap water in plastic bottles. #plasticpollution #water #health #wellness #nature #environment #government

A proposal to tackle waste in Connecticut could radically change how residents handle food scraps. Senate Bill 191 would make food scrap recycling mandatory. Under the proposal, every municipality must establish programs by Jan.1, 2028, that require residents to separate food scraps, food processing residues, and organic material from their trash for recycling at authorized composting facilities and other locations. The bill would also add residentially generated food scraps to the state’s list of “Items Designated for Recycling” and require large waste generators to donate edible food before it becomes compost. 📖 https://bit.ly/4dgbw4j 📰 The Hartford Courant #environmentallaw #environmentallawyer #desautelbrowninglaw #newengland

Water is a precious resource, and preserving it is a collective responsibility. As water stewards’, Thungela strives to lead by example and encourage everyone to take action towards water preservation. As of 2022, we have decreased our importation of water by 11% and moved to recycle water instead. Through the eMalahleni Water Treatment Plant (EWTP), we can preserve and recycle water for reusing in our operations. We also implement new technologies that help us share clean drinking water with our local communities. To maximise the capacity of EWTP, we set a target to increase water reuse and recycling levels to 75% by 2023 and have since exceeded the target by achieving an incredible 96%. Together we can ensure access to clean water resources. #ImpactWithPurpose #ThungelaTogether #ThungelaFishBreedingFacility #EnvironmentalSustainability

The Waste and Resource Recovery Association fully supports the introduction of food and organic (FOGO) waste collections by councils. The NSW and Australian Governments have a target of halving the amount of food waste going into landfill by 2030. Food and organics waste is the major contributor to the emission of methane gas, which is around 28 times more potent than carbon at trapping heat in the atmosphere. In WMRRs view, it is far better we reuse this material for compost to improve our soils and grow the crops we need, rather than sending it to landfill. What is even better, however, is for households to work to reduce the amount of food waste they generate each year. WMRR also supports that in addition to rolling out FOGO bins, councils roll out education campaigns to help households cut down on their food waste. This will also cut their food bill too. The average family throws out around $1,000 in food each year. Gayle Sloan NSW Government Australian Government Local Government NSW #fogo #recycling #reuse #circulareconomy #warr #wmrr

Australia’s #organicwaste processors have reported that they are inundated by #contamination in Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins. 27% of Australia’s 500-plus councils have rolled out the 3-bin FOGO system to homes and businesses, while another 16% collect garden waste only. However, for many residents, #FOGO bins are still a relatively new service and it will take time for them to adjust, with experts calling for greater education for citizens on organic waste. This will be needed to reach the national goal for all metro cities to recycle food waste by 2030. Much-needed infrastructure to collect and process the #foodwaste is also still being set up. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water said that to date, over $34 million had been spent on 23 projects to build and improve existing organic recycling facilities. What’s your take on our #foodprocessing infrastructure in Australia?
