For now, they’re leaning on tried-and-true KPIs such as brand awareness and brand loyalty — when they’re scrutinizing the numbers at all, that is. “At this point, everything is a test — so I might have liked the numbers, but did I have anything to benchmark against? Naming a set of twenty highest revenue generating clubs ‘The Moneyed League’ is not for nothing. In 21/22, the cumulative revenue generated by these twenty clubs is almost 54% of the total revenue generated by all the 98 clubs of ‘big five’ leagues combined. That, in a nutshell, is the reason why we are forced to call them ‘The Moneyed League' Every year, Deloitte releases a report profiling the top 30 revenue generating clubs. At Sports Business Institute Barcelona, we sank our teeth in the last few years’ reports and got some interesting insights - The moneyed league clubs have been displaying a consistent cumulative revenue growth to the tune of 9% CAGR over the last 3 years - Commercial revenue stream growing y-o-y at a consistent 8% CAGR - There is another league within the league! The revenue gap between top 10 and next 10 is growing y-o-y and the gap in 22/23 is about €3.8bn. 9 out of these top 10 were a part of the Super League!!! - 57% of the top 30 money-league clubs are part of the multi-club ownership (MCO) network and more... Since COVID, merchandising and eCommerce have skyrocketed! 🚀 With 67% of consumers stated that COVID has changed the way they shop and 20-30% of businesses moving their operations online since the pandemic. So what can the world of football and the Premier League learn from retail? ⚽ Take Everton Football Club, Chelsea Football Club or Manchester City Football Club, for example. With their ongoing trials and tribulations involving #FFP (Financial Fair Play), clubs are being fined point deductions and various other punishments for breaking the new financial regulations. Long gone are the days when January transfer windows can end up with close to £1bn in transfer fees and trading. This January deadline day saw Premier League Clubs spend a total of £76m. January 2023's deadline day saw a total spend of £843m (that's a reduction of over 90%!) That type of revenue loss for clubs will have HUGE financial implications in the future 😨 So what can Premier League Clubs do to resolve this? Revenue diversification. One club leading the way in RD is Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Spurs are now the richest club in the premier league, thanks to their commercial revenue from the acquisition of NFL hosting rights, concerts and boxing events, "...becoming the eighth richest club in the world with annual revenues of £549.2m", according to Deloitte. Spurs have invested heavily externally to build their brand internally. This is the way forward for any business. This is exactly what the likes of John Lewis & Partners, Samsung Electronics and IKEA have done by implementing platforms like Quicklizard (TASE:QLRD) for its AI-powered Pricing Optimisation capabilities and embracing revenue diversification. After an intense tender process at the start of last season, we're proud to announce three new partners at Club Brugge who will radically change and optimise fan experience in and around Jan Breydel stadium and The Nest stadium as of next season. To improve access, we're teaming up with SKIDATA BNLX, a leading player in the stadium industry and other sectors such as ski resorts and parking systems. Our stadium now belongs to a group of leading football clubs and stadiums that use the same technology, including Manchester United, Allianz Arena München Stadion GmbH and Sporting Clube de Portugal. We're also optimising our payment systems for next season. Partners Sjef.app and Adyen are joining forces to provide our fans with a seamless payment experience. That means fans will still be able to pay with our loyalty card: Club ID, but they will also be able to pay with their personal payment method of choice. Sjef.app supplies the new cash register systems in the stadium. Adyen, as a payment partner, will process all payments, both offline for food, drinks and merchandising, but also online for tickets or our online shop.
