Supporting landowners to rewild | Practical advice through Rewilding Network | Ecologist |Views are my own
#Rewilding should be accessible to everyone. Which is why rewilding our schools is just as important as rewilding our countryside. If you want to find out more about rewilding in schools, you can sign up for a free webinar hosted by the Yorkshire Rewilding Network on Tuesday, 16th January, 2024, 19.30 to 20.30 The webinar will discuss empowering young people to reconnect with nature and shape the future, and will be presented by presented by Lesley Malpas, Founder and CEO of Operation Future Hope. The talk will explain why it is so important to engage children with nature within their school environment and give practical guidance and examples on how to rewild school grounds both in urban and rural locations. Lesley will also discuss the urgent need for cultural change, show how children are at the centre of this, and explain how rewilding is also a movement that can lead us towards a much needed tipping point in human history where we transition to Earth stewardship and regenerative cultures. Gensler’s Robert B Bradford, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB and Hannah Sargent,AIA say that schools are critical spaces that shape the students that learn within their walls and they’re right. With over 15,000 hours spent in school over an academic lifetime, educational spaces are paramount to student success. Join Rob and Hannah as they explore what considerations are necessary in repurposing stranded assets for educational institutions. https://bit.ly/3J0uTAv

DONEGAL MOVES TO ZERO: Recently we handed over two ‘A’ rated educational schemes for secondary colleges, completing a busy period of installs across the ‘Hills of Donegal’. 🍃Situated on one of the most picturesque sites in all of Ireland, just on the edge of Mulroy Bay, Milford, a new, two-storey classroom block is now fully-utilised at Mulroy College. Spanning over 880 sqm, the new block consists of seven mainstream classrooms, three SET rooms, two offices and washrooms. Completed in a sargasso and oyster grey colourway that’s sympathetic to the backdrop of Mulroy Bay, Mulroy College is now benefitting from a new building that’s comfortable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly, creating a healthy learning environment for the school community. 🍃Just 15 kilometers away, a new energy-efficient and sustainable modular building has been installed at Errigal College, Letterkenny. Offering an additional 840sqm of space and built to #GreenBuildingPractices, the standalone, two-story block was completed within six months, and has already achieved a 'best in class' BER A rating. With both buildings manufactured offsite in our premises in Co. Tyrone, disruption to the school communities was significantly reduced, as was the timeframe, which are just some of the reasons why so many schools are choosing to #movetozero with Mac Zero Modular Buildings #greenbuildingpractices #movetozero #sustainablebuildings #modularbuildings #educationbuildings #lowcarbon #modernmethodsofconstruction #futureproofing

"Where there's a sustainable environment, where there's energy consciousness, there is good health." — Gaurav Khadse, Vice President of Facilities Planning and Development at Texas Children's Hospital. When Texas Children's Hospital, one of the leading pediatric hospitals in America, decided to expand its footprint into the Central Texas market with its North Austin Campus, it had a goal of achieving a two-star rating under the Austin Energy Green Building program (AEGB) -- a precursor to the LEED rating system. Not only did this project achieve that goal, it exceeded it. The campus earned a 3-star rating by harnessing innovative technologies, including recycling condensate water for landscape irrigation, a landscape design that honors Central Texas ecology, efficient electrical and plumbing fixtures, and a larger retention wet pond. We are proud of the collaborative work that went into this project, helping Texas Children's achieve their goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 while providing world-class care to children, women, and families. #CuratingCare #PediatricHospitalDesign #HealthcareArchitecture #TexasChildrensATX #DesignThatMakesLivesBetter

Curious how brownfield redevelopment can revitalize your neighborhood? Learn about how other communities have utilized brownfield redevelopment! To respond to declining forest health, high risk of catastrophic wildfire, and poor socioeconomic conditions in a community that has historically had a strong presence in the timber industry, Sierra Institute for Community and the Environment has repurposed an old sawmill site for an innovative wood products campus in Crescent Mills. The Indian Valley Wood Utilization Campus takes burned and hazard trees, removed to maintain the health of forests, into lumber. This locally-sourced lumber is helping to rebuild the town of Greenville, which was destroyed in the 2020 Dixie Fire, while also creating jobs for a community with high unemployment rates. The new campus is facilitating economic and sustainable forest management and creating a circular economy where residents can purchase lumber milled locally, and also generating clean, locally sourced energy through biomass heating, which transforms timber cleared for fire prevention, and which is unusable as building materials, into fuel, reducing the need for imported fossil fuels. At full build-out, this campus will generate 30-50 well paying industry jobs for local residents. Contact CCLR to learn how we can start your community on the path to reclaim and transform this land back into beneficial uses such as parks and housing. Learn more here: https://loom.ly/0MP-4H8

HYVERT ‘Living Lab’ All Saints - The next chapter... They say, ‘all good things must come to an end’, but when the ‘thing’ is as good as HYVERT, it simply has to be a case of repurpose and reuse - which is exactly what’s about to happen. ♻🌿 Manchester Metropolitan University’s All Saints building, the fabulous home for our HYVERT ‘Living Lab’ for the last twelve months is to be redeveloped with plans submitted to replace it with an ‘innovative design, modern and dynamic learning environment that places students and their learning at its core’. Installed in Summer 2023 and bordering the Mancunian Way city by-pass, it has been a most valuable test bed for our KTP Manchester Met with the University, enabling a huge variety of experiments and research analysis.🌿📈 HYVERT All Saints has been extremely successful and since its HYVERT Water management system was installed it has reduced the need for fresh water by 88% by using a combination of harvested rainwaterand recycled wastewater!🌧️♻️ None of which has negatively impacted plant health. ✅🌿 So what next?...💡 Ahead of All Saints’ redevelopment, HYVERT will be removed from the site which will allow us to sample in greater depth the types of pollutants it has absorbed over the past year. 🔬🌿 It will then be cleaned and repurposed for exciting new research - including a large-scale thermal performance experiment in collaboration with The University of Salford and The Manchester Metropolitan University. We look forward to sharing more research findings very soon. 👍 #Repurpose #AllSaints #ManchesterMet #HYVERT #LivingLab #Livingwall #ScientificResearch #EnvironmentalResearch #IWantPlants #Manchester
