It's #WellnessWednesdayxDST! Join us tonight, May 8, 2024, at 8:00 PM ET to learn more information to be able to build your Special Education Toolkit and relationship with NAMI. Did you realize that developmental disorders such as autism, reading and math deficits, attention deficit, and intellectual disabilities are mental health disorders? Although children may first show these symptoms in educational settings, the symptoms are, in fact, indicative of mental health disorders. The National Physical and Mental Health Subcommittee has partnered with the National Educational Development Subcommittee to develop a highly informative and engaging webinar to aid families who may care for or interact with children and young adults with special needs within the education system. We will address the referral, assessment, and treatment for children with special needs as well as share how you may advocate for your loved one. It brings us great joy to welcome the new members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, who were initiated in the Spring 2024! We are elated to have you a part of our legacy of sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action. During this time 206 chapters welcomed 4,524 new sorors. Additionally, we charted FIVE new chapters across the Midwest and Southern Regions: Terre Haute Wabash Alumnae, Clay County (FL) Alumnae, North Fulton Alumnae, Fayette County Alumnae, and Shelby Area Alumnae! Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is excited to congratulate four of our members who have been named grant recipients of the “Invest in Progress” Grant Program presented by BOSS Network and Sage to support Black women-led businesses in building scalable, growth-aggressive companies. Congratulations to these Deltapreneurs: Jessica Childress of Juris Prudence LLC; Dr. Nadine Duncan of The Traveling Women Network; Nwamaka Ngoddy of Anwuli Eyewear; and Alicia Thomas of Lush Pops.  There were 11,000 applications received (more than 500 from members of Delta Sigma Theta), and these four recipients are among the overall top 25 selected. Today we celebrate the life and legacy of our beloved National Social Action Commissioner, Dr. Marcella Maxwell. Soror Maxwell lived a beautiful life of 96 years, filled with vibrancy, service, and impact, and left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was a renowned educator and champion of social justice, with an extensive background in addressing issues of intergenerational health, community development, fund development and government relations. Dr. Maxwell earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education from Long Island University and her doctorate in educational administration from Fordham University. Soror Maxwell was a proud member of the North Manhattan Alumnae Chapter and was unwavering in her devotion to Delta Sigma Theta for over 50 years. In 2015, she was presented with the Althea T.L. Simmons Award during the 52nd National Convention in recognition of her drive and dedication for civil rights as an advocate and civil servant. She served many years as Co-Chair to the Delta Days at the United Nations Subcommittee of the National Social Action Commission. She has been instrumental in the Sorority having Delta Days at the United Nations, and was able to be apart of the 2023 program in which the Sorority celebrated the 20th anniversary of receiving NGO Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Soror Maxwell's legacy of service transcends far beyond Delta as she was also a proud member of the Links, Inc., the NAACP, the New York Women’s Forum, and a devoted member of the Abyssinian Baptist Church. Under New York Mayor Ed Koch, she served as commissioner of human rights and chair of the Commission on Women and she also served as the NAACP's Special Contribution Fund Trustees Vice Chairman. Soror Maxwell's contributions to social action and Delta Sigma Theta will never be forgotten. Her spirit and dedication will continue to live on in the many sorors that she mentored and inspired. #DST1913 #DrMarcellaMaxwell

Today we celebrate the life and legacy of our beloved 20th National President Bertha Maxwell Roddey. An esteemed educator and Civil Rights activist, Dr. Roddey was a proud graduate of Johnson C. Smith University (class of 1954). Here, her lifetime commitment began as a 1951 initiate of the Gamma Lambda Chapter. She would go on to serve as Charlotte Alumnae Chapter President (1964 – 1966), South Atlantic Regional Director (1982 – 1986), National First Vice President (1988 – 1992), and 20th National President (1992 – 1996). Dr. Roddey has the distinction of being the first National President to be elected from the South Atlantic Region. Her tenure as National President is marked by a commitment to service and strategic partnerships. One of the monumental aspects of her administration was establishing a partnership with Habitat for Humanity to address housing insecurity. As a result of the partnership, Delta Sigma Theta helped to build hundreds of homes for families in the United States, the Caribbean, and in Africa. Soror Roddey was a cherished member of the Charlotte Alumnae Chapter and was unwavering in her devotion to Delta Sigma Theta. She was presented with the National President’s Award of Excellence during the 56th National Convention in 2023, in recognition of her 72 years of active engagement and impactful service. One of her last outings with her beloved sorors was in Charlotte during the February 2024 meeting of the National Scholarship and Standards Committee. Her warm smile and sensational personality are fondly remembered throughout the South Atlantic Region and the entire Sorority. #DST1913

The 20th Annual Delta Days at the United Nations is officially underway! Today, 900 members (virtual and in-person) came together during the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women to address poverty, economic opportunity, gender equality, and the empowerment of women and girls. Delta Sigma Theta has been invested in international affairs for more than 70 years because our early leaders believed that Delta could be of some tangible assistance, however small, in solving some of the world's greatest problems. As a result, we received non-governmental organization special consultative status at the United Nations in 2003.
