A couple of weeks ago I hosted a gather of people intersted in The Crossroads Collaboratory. Several people commented that that had held conversations they wouldn't have with people they wouldn't have met otherwise. That is the whole point!

A tech founder who is 50 is twice as likely to start a successful company as one who is 30. A study by researchers at Northwestern University, MIT, and the U.S. Census Bureau found that the fastest-growing start-ups were founded by people whose average age was 45 when their company was launched. The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation produced a study that found that the peak innovation age is the late 40s. The average age of a U.S. patent applicant is 47. A 45-year-old is twice as likely to produce a scientific breakthrough as a 25-year-old. A study published in The American Economic Review found 45 to be the average age of an entrepreneur–and found furthermore that the likelihood that an entrepreneur’s start-up will succeed increases significantly between ages 25 and 35, with the odds of success continuing to rise well into the 50s.

Spoke to young professionals this weekend at APPNA. You don’t need to have it all figured out at 25. At “midcareer” I am still evolving: in the middle of a career pivot, launching a #tech company, and following a new passion. Early in life/career, I did not know what I wanted. “Follow your passion” made no sense to me. I was “the good daughter”, conflict averse, who did what others wanted me to do. In fact, I fully intended to have a low key or no career and focus on being a wife and mother. My mother had left her PhD to be a mom and housewife and as a child I wanted to be like her. Becoming a c-level executive was never my plan. After finishing fellowship at 30 I spend 7 years in an entry level (dead end) job as an urgent care doctor, at the lowest rung of respect within the organization, with a not great boss. Despite getting no respect at work, I had a good life, working a few 8-12-hour shifts on weekends, holidays, weekends and having time to travel, saw family, etc. Work was what I did to support a life I enjoyed, was not my identity. It was only when work became excessively toxic - the role being more and more devalued and bad management - that I sought a change. Thing is, the nature of #healthcare is that people’s lives and wellbeing are at risk so I could not be complacent. It is not like a paper pusher desk job where you need look busy until 5 p.m. and repeat daily until retirement. “First do no harm.” As I am not only a doctor but a patient and a caregiver, I saw ways our system harms despite well meaning people working within it. If you care deeply about “first do no harm” that can create friction. When you speak up to address gaps, barriers, problems, safety, etc, someone might not like that. Some of the times I moved on to a new job and up the food chain in order to have more influence or control over quality, safety, work culture, patient outcomes. I wanted to get above bad managers. Now, am seeking to “disrupt” the status quo from the outside, as a #tech #entrepreneur and #founder. If we live in a capitalist country then the way to have an impact is not via a title but by having a sound business case to be relevant and to change systems for the better. I am very much a late bloomer.
